Prep

LI: To continue to build on their knowledge of rhythm and beat.

 

Throughout Term Three, Prep students will continue to build on their knowledge of rhythm and beat. New notations such as za (crotchet rest) will be introduced and they will compose and play their own short melody. Students will also continue their work on stick notation with ta (crotchets) and ti-ti (quavers) using their knowledge of high and low sounds in preparation for the stave.

 

Year 1

LI: To begin to use the stave in relation to pitch

 

During Term Three, Year One students will utilise their existing knowledge of pitch and begin to apply it to the stave. They will learn more short pieces whilst continuing to identify the notes using musical language, ‘so, mi and la’. Students will begin to learn about the form of musical pieces and compose melodies using these forms.

 

Year 2

LI: To understand how and why bar lines are used and to begin to compose short melodies on the stave.

 

In Term Three, Year Two students will begin to explore the use of bar lines in music. They will develop an understanding of how these bar lines assist with beat and melody. Students will explore the different combination of notes and beats that can be used in each bar. They will continue exploring intervals (steps and skips) on the Tone ladder and begin to develop their musical language in this area. 

 

Year 3

LI: To use their existing knowledge of music and apply it to the piano.

 

Throughout Term Three, Year Three students will use their existing knowledge and begin to apply it to playing the piano. Students will develop their skills in beat and rhythm by rehearsing short pieces on the piano. They will also begin to compose their own short and simple pieces on the piano both individually and in small groups. Students will rehearse and perform these pieces for their peers.

 

Year 4

LI: To understand how to apply their existing knowledge to compose a piece on the piano.

 

In Term Three, Year Four students will begin to use their existing knowledge to compose pieces using the stave, on the piano. Student will compose these pieces both in small groups and individually. When performing these pieces in small groups students will continue to apply their knowledge of tempo, beat and tone colour. Students will explore ways (listening and counting beats) that they can stay together when performing in a small group.   

 

Year 5

LI: To understand how triads can fit with melody to create a harmony.

 

This term, Year Five students will explore how triads fit with melody to create a harmony. They will also continue to deepen their understanding of harmony and melody and how they fit together. Students will also continue to apply this knowledge to their chosen instrument and understand how to play with a small group or partner.

 

Year 6

LI: To understand how melody and harmony work together.

 

Throughout Term Three, Year Six students will develop their understanding of how melody and harmony work together in musical arrangements. Students will begin to create their own simple melodies and harmonies within a small group. These compositions will then be rehearsed and performed to their peers.
