LOTE - Term 3, 2021

 

Welcome back to Term Three, we hope everyone enjoyed their holiday break! In Term 2, learners engaged in language acquisition associated with their Inquiry units of study, and the dragon boat Festival. In Term Three, students will further consolidate their language skills and begin new Inquiry-based units of learning. ​

 

 

PREP

LI: To understand the Chinese language of farm animals.

 

Learners will focus on the names and simple adjectives of “Farm Animals”. They will learn to read/recognise the vocabulary such as sheep, horse and cow, and to apply their knowledge in conversations about farm animals with peers. Learners will demonstrate knowledge through creating a fantasy farm that contains a variety of animals.

 

Year 1

LI: To understand the Chinese language of vegetables.

 

Learners will explore the theme of “Vegetables”. They will learn to read/recognise the vocabulary such as carrot, capsicum and lettuce, and to apply knowledge to have conversations about vegetables with peers. Learners will demonstrate knowledge through describing a fridge that contains a variety of vegetables.

 

YEAR 2

LI: To understand and recall learnt topics.

 

Learners will focus on the reinforcement of learnt topics of “Family”, “Colours”, “Fruit” and “Pets”. They will explore how these areas are used to make up dialogue. Learners are will demonstrate their language skills through creating a booklet that introduces their family and their own personal preferences.

 

 

YEAR 3

LI: To understand the Chinese language of rooms.

 

Learners will be focusing on the vocabulary of rooms in pinyin/character form and the informative writing in Chinese. They will also inquire on how cultural differences impact architectural design through the lens of globalisation.  They will then create a poster presentation to demonstrate their learning.

 

 

Year 4

LI: To understand the Chinese language of school subjects

 

Learners will focus on the topic of “school subjects”. They will learn to read/recognise the vocabulary of school subjects and to apply knowledge to have conversations about school subjects with peers. As a demonstration of their knowledge, learners will create a survey of school subjects and analyse the survey data in Mandarin.

 

 

Year 5

LI: To understand how to make a phone call in Chinese.

 

Learners will examine how to make a phone call in Chinese. They will explore the different phone call manners around the world. Learners will use familiar vocabulary and sentences to make phone call conversations in Chinese. For example: how to order take away from a restaurant, how to make an appointment to see a doctor, etc. At the end of the term, learners will perform a group role-play and create different scenarios with phone calls in Chinese to celebrate their learning. 

 

 

Year 6

LI: to understand the significance of the cities in the world.

 

Learners will learn about some main cities in China and around the world.  They will focus on using essential words and sentences to express their thinking about different cities in Chinese. The inquiry-based learning will help learners to make connections and engage with the cities through a global lens. Learners will explore; the history, influence and impact upon society, politics, economy, and the environment of important cities around the world. As a celebration, students will prepare a group presentation to share their learning.
