Learning & Teaching 5/6SC

A Snapshot of Learning in 5/6SC

5/6SC have had a wonderful term and can’t believe we are already half way through the year! Here is what our class had to say about what they have enjoyed or learnt this term.

A recurring highlight were our Passion Projects. This was time for each student to develop their own question/wondering about something they were specifically interested in.

First, we brainstormed our interests and passions, posed a ‘thick’ question (one that can’t easily be answered by Google with one search), researched our question and then created a product to share their findings.

We presented our projects at the COHR Passion Project Expo in Wellbeing Week.

In Humanities this term we have explored many different topics, from migrants and refugees and why people leave or move to other countries, to exploring the history, culture and importance of Australia’s First Nation Peoples. Through photos, videos, research and music, we became aware of how Aboriginal People are spiritually connected to the land and wrote our own acknowledgement of country which is now used at our school assemblies. We were also introduced to the Stolen Generation and National Sorry Day. Our class created a picture book to accompany Archie Roach’s song, ‘Took the Children Away’.

Another highlight of the term was learning about Australia’s democracy, government and voting system. We developed campaign posters to persuade others to vote for our candidate and then at the end of the week, went to the polls to have our say! Some classmates took on the roles of election officials, voted and counted in our preferential vote election. A majority vote was achieved and Cars was the winner.
