Principal's Message

The weather over the last week has given us a small taste of the Spring weather that is to come and has been just enough to lift our spirits when we are finding it hard to get moving on the colder days.

The Performing Arts Domain hosted their annual Music Camp at Camp Oasis in Mount Evelyn last week. Nearly 90 students from Years 8 to 12 attended the camp and the fruits of their endeavours will be shared with us at the Winter Concert next Monday night. This is an important part of the MGSC experience and would not happen without the hard work of our Music staff. As such, I would like to thank the following staff for giving up their time – Tim Veevers, Eric Ho, Wendy Harvey, Sara-Louise Jacobs, Claire McGann, Cristy Savage, Sue Cook, Peter Blick, Blanka West, David Seedsman, Alexandra Mikhailova, Nigel Maas, and Curtis Spiers. The Winter Concert will have approximately 300 students performing at the Frankston Arts Centre.

The Languages Domain also hosted Languages Week last week.  During this week they promoted and celebrated the languages and culture that we teach here at MGSC – Japanese and French. There were a range of activities offered each day for the students, such as raijo taiso (light stretching) and crepes just to name a few.  My sincere thanks to Emma Dickson, Josh Sinclair, Felicia Lauw, Petra Witt, Hatsu Watanabe, Anne-Claire Brunet for all their enthusiasm and time organising and hosting the activities this week.  The students had a wonderful time.

There has been a lot happening in the Student Engagement and Wellbeing space at MGSC as well.  Wellbeing is such a broad term and it difficult to make mention of all the amazing work that goes on behind the scenes at MGSC to support our students as they transition from being young children to young adults. So today, I will highlight how small and symbolic actions can help to create a safe, supportive, and caring environment for all our students at MGSC. Justine Bowers, the Student Engagement, Wellbeing and Respectful Relationships Learning Specialist has been instrumental in making our school values visible and, thereby, signal to our school community that MGSC is an inclusive school and that living the school values is something to be celebrated.

One of these actions has been the updating of our school communications to include the Australian, Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Pride flags in addition to the use of gender pronouns in our email signatures. The flags are below for your reference. Another critical action is the introduction of the MGSC Value Awards. Our students will begin to receive awards for demonstrating the MGSC School Values of inclusivity, empowerment, creativity and achievement  in the next few weeks.
