Learn what opportunities our students have been taking on
Well done to the students across all year levels who participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC). The AMC contains unique problems designed each year by leading educators and academics to challenge and extend students’ problem-solving skills.
VCE Outdoor and Environmental Studies students recently went on an adventure to the Grampians National Park (Gariwerd), exploring the characteristics of the environment, impacts of fire, land management strategies and recreational activities within the environment.
This was a great experience for our students and we are very lucky to live near such a beautiful natural environment.
Recently, our Year 9 Outdoor Education students walked to the Horsham Regional Art Gallery to experience the NAIDOC Week Art Exhibition in conjunction with Goolum Goolum. The students are currently learning about Indigenous relationships with culture and country.
The theme for this year’s NAIDOC Week and for this exhibition is ‘For Our Elders’ and celebrates the contributions, love, and legacy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders.
On Wednesday 26th July, a group of our students spent the day at Camberwell Grammar School attending the Nanotechnology Junior Stretch Challenge. It was a great day for the students who had the opportunity to connect with students from other schools and delve into learning activities to tackle big questions like 'how will nanotechnology influence the future?'.
The conference finished off with a debate and congratulations to Eamon Kelly who represented St Brigid's and did an excellent job.
Thank you to the staff and parent volunteer who accompanied the students on this exciting excursion.
Last week, Year 9 students who are interested in starting a VET program in 2024 were given the opportunity to participate in a VET campus tour and information session at Federation University Australia. The tour included the following areas: health, early childcare, hair and beauty, plumbing, building and construction, electrotechnology, automotive and engineering. During the tour students were able to see two of our current VET students, Madison Scott and Phoenix McKinnon, in action. Thank you to Federation University for providing this opportunity for our students.
Congratulations to St Brigid's College Year 11 student, Jorja Clode, for being named runner-up MVP for Melbourne University Lightning Bolts 2 for the 2023 autumn season. Well done Jorja!
8/9 Art Elective Excursion
On Tuesday 15 August, Ms Moar’s Art Elective class attended a workshop at the Horsham Town Hall with international designer Gustavo Morales. Gustav runs the design studio, Kattattack, located in Melbourne and Mexico City, specialising in posters, illustrations and murals for cultural, educational and social projects. Gustavo and his workshops focus on giving voice to young people and social issues often about the environment, mental health, diversity, and social connectedness. Gustavo showed us examples of his work and helped groups of students use the creative thinking technique of forced associations to develop creative ideas for a poster based on issues important to them. The workshop illustrated how graphics are a way of sharing an important message.
On Tuesday we celebrated the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, commemorating the end of her earthly life and assumption into Heaven. Students and staff were led by Father Matt in a liturgy held at school.
We also celebrated recent achievements of our students in NAPLAN in our commendation system. Well done to Xena Aroza and Lily Jones who exceeded the standard in reading and reading and numeracy in the Year 9 NAPLAN.
The commendation system is used to acknowledge students who strive to achieve personal excellence. It recognises a range of endeavours to which our students contribute. Students earn points in recognition for genuine achievement in the areas of academic, community service and social justice, leadership, the arts and cultural experiences and sport.

On Wednesday, we represented St Brigid’s College at the Australian Citizenship ceremony for Year 11 student, Eh Ku Gay Taw and her mother and brother. The ceremony was held by the Hindmarsh Shire Council in Nhill. The family began the arduous process of seeking Australian Citizenship back in 2018, so it was wonderful to join with them on this special day. The family wore the traditional dress of the Karen people of Myanmar. It was smiles all round when we walked in carrying a gift of native flowers and a card from Gerard, on behalf of the school. They didn’t know we were coming and they were thrilled that we acknowledged their special day. Eh Ku’s family fled Myanmar’s military which has created a perpetual human rights crisis through the continuous use of violence, including the killing, arbitrary arrest, torture and enforced disappearance of their opponents. Myanmar’s loss is Australia’s gain, and this influx of newcomers continues to bring new life to our community. We felt quite emotional when we joined in with them to sing the National Anthem, and as we drove back to Horsham, the green and gold of the wattle and the canola, made us count our blessings that such beautiful gentle people had chosen to call the Wimmera home.
This week students got involved in a friendly game of soccer at lunchtime to celebrate the success of the Matildas and prepare for Wednesday's semi-final game!
Thank you to Noah from Horsham & District Soccer Club for running the session for our students!
