Kitchen Garden

Winter in the Kitchen Garden at WEPS.

Although it’s cold and wet this this time of the year, it doesn’t mean the garden stops.

Our garden is a mass of green right now with many different vegetables in shades of green, in an array of shapes, sizes and textures.

The vegetables are all at different stages of growth which will allow us to have continual harvest opportunities this term for some cooking sessions, soups days and a stall.

Vegetables in the garden:

Springs Onions and Leeks

Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage and Kale

Celery

Lettuce

Bok Choy

Spinach, Silver beet and Rainbow Chard

Carrots and Beetroot

Potatoes

The Lemon tree has some fruit on it and, as always, the Rhubarb never lets us down.

In the home garden

If its been too cold for you to garden, don’t worry, now is the perfect time of year to prepare your garden beds for a bumper spring/summer season.

Top dress your garden beds with some well-rotted compost and sheep or horse manure.  If you have lots of vegetable and fruit scarps, but no compost bin, why not try collecting your scraps in a bucket and simply dig a hole in a garden bed and tip the scraps straight in. Over time, the microbes in the garden will break down the scraps into rich composts, full of nutrients that your garden will love.

Happy Gardening!

Mushroom Kits

The 3/4 learning community have been lucky enough to be given mushroom kits. At the beginning of this week, students from 3/4C prepared the kits for each class. The students added soil to the tops of the kits and gave them a water so that they felt like a damp sponge. We look forward to watching the mushrooms grow!
