Year 12 Chemistry

Students have been learning some techniques involved in analytical chemistry.

During this practical class, they were carrying out an acid-base titration. In particular, they were investigating whether the manufacturers claim that each aspirin tablet contained a 300mg dose of aspirin. They concluded that within appropriate ranges of experimental error, the manufacturer's claims were verified.

VCE Outdoor Education - Canoeing on The Nicholson River

When we left in the morning it was wet and raining and no one was looking forward to the event ahead. When we got onto the water the clouds had started to disappear, the sun came out and the mood improved.  Everyone started to work on their skills and got better at paddling.  Highlight of the day would be the race at the finish, with a lot of boats ramming into each other.

Written by Cooper Year 10

Cooper and Calen improved significantly after they both sat facing the same direction in the canoe!

The Nicholson River was a great location for a paddle, and students enjoyed checking out the rail bridge from the water.

Raft up!

In preparation for their canoe trip on the Nicholson river VCE Outdoor Education students headed to the BARC to complete a swimming assessment. Students needed to demonstrate adequate skill and ability for canoeing. The class practised a variety of self rescues, and simulated swimming in challenging conditions.

VM Fishing Excursion - Lakes Entrance

On the 10th of August, Mrs Blackley's PDS (Personal Development Skills) class went on an excursion to the Lakes Entrance Co-op. They learnt about the process of how the fish are brought in, weighed, filleted, packed, and sent away or bought. This was part of learning about how the fishing in the Gippsland area has changed since the ban of commercial fishing in the Gippsland Lakes.

The Class learnt about how Lakes Entrance holds the largest fishing fleet in Australia with 57 fishing vessels, and processes 2-3 tons of fish a day.  We would like to say thank you for the Co-op for the experience to tour their factory.

VM Pie Making Competition

Milarney a member of the Kitchen Garden group of VM students organised a pie competition for VM students. Students had to submit their recipe along with the ingredients required and were given two sessions to cook up their culinary delight. A variety of sweet and savory pies were made, and the judges were invited to taste and mark according to appearance, taste, degree of difficulty and creativity. Judging was taken extremely seriously with an eventual winner being declared.

Lemon Meringue, Apple, Danish Apple, Peach and Blueberry, Shepherd’s Pie and Lemon Bomb Pie were all declared delicious whilst the good old Australian Meat Pie prepared by Noah, Lincoln and Trevor was declared the eventual winner. All students, teachers and judges left the room satisfied and wanting more.

The winning pie will be mass produced in the coming weeks and available for staff to purchase as a take home meal.

National Tree Day

East Gippsland Youth Ambassadors Juliette, Tasmyn, Cydni  and Eloise helped organise National Tree Day on behalf of Bairnsdale Secondary College and the East Gippsland Specialist School. The youth ambassadors worked with the VCE Vocational Major community and Special School students to plan and organise the event.

The students invited councillors Mendy Urie and Kirsten. Van Diggele, from East Gippsland Shire as well as sustainability manager Wayne Burton and Environmental Manager Kate Allen. Past student Chloe who is undertaking a traineeship with the shire in the role of youth engagement also attended.

The morning was a terrific success with the VCE VM students and youth ambassadors planting over 200 seedlings followed by morning tea provided by the shire. The commitment by the students was recognised in the 2023 Australia Day awards with the event winning best community project.

Jane Goodwin visit

On Wednesday, the College was visited by author Jane Godwin. She has written over 35 books including many children's books and a few novels. She has also worked as an editor and a publisher at Penguin Books. Our creative writing class was lucky enough to get the chance to meet her and hear her talk about her experiences and perspectives as an author. She explained where she gains a lot of her inspiration from including family secrets, real life experiences, texts that she’s read like other books and articles, and ideas that just seem to appear out of nowhere. She went into depth about a few of her novels and children’s books and where the ideas for them came from and how she plans when beginning a new book. It was all very interesting to listen to and gave us ideas about what we could do to improve our writing.

We were very grateful for this experience, and we thank our teacher, Ms Kaur, and the school for organising this workshop.
