From the Head of Sport

Welcome back to school and to the end of the winter sport season. We have three rounds of competition before the Semi-Finals and Finals so please ensure you are at all training sessions and games. Qualification does apply for all players to play in Finals.

All training recommenced this week. Please remember that training is only cancelled if an alternate venue cannot be arranged. At this stage all training sessions are on and if you have any questions regarding games or training please talk to your MIC.

Basketball

Many thanks to Mr Quilter for organising Hoops Capital to send up coaches to do some work with our up and coming basketballers. Mr Quilter's report appears below.

Cricket

Cricket trials will be held on Monday of Week 3 (31st July). This will give students who do not normally play Cricket for BMGS the opportunity to trial for the BMGS team before committing to an external competition. Please see me if you are unable to attend trials.

Athletics Carnival

The ISA Athletics Carnival will be held on Tuesday, 12th September. The team list is on the Sports noticeboard and permission notes will be distributed shortly. Please come and see me if there are issues regarding the events that you are entered in.

Any students who currently participate in triple jump or hurdle events through Little Athletics can come and see me at the Sports Office for further information.

If you do not have a BMGS Basketball or Athletics singlet you will be required to hire one from the Uniform Shop. All athletes are to wear navy shorts or tights to compete.

Professional Coach puts BMGS Basketball players through their paces!

Recently Coach Will Granger, Assistant Coach for the Sydney Flames (the professional Women’s team in Sydney) visited BMGS and ran a series of skills and concepts clinics for approx. 30 students. Held on Monday and Tuesday afternoon just prior to Term 3 commencing, students from Years 7 through 11 attended the clinics.

“This is the first of a series of planned guest coaching clinics.” MIC John Quilter explained, “Our students are capable of reaching impressive standards of play, and this is a part of the process and long term plan that we have to help those who are interested, to see how good they can become.”

Certainly the coaching that focused on developing concepts within the “pick and roll” was very new for many of the students.

“I liked the way the ideas were broken into smaller parts, it made it easier to learn them, and use them.” said Toby Hammon (Year 8).

“It’s really cool to know that a lot of the training we do is similar to what pro-players do, and it’s good to hear that to really get better, you have to be prepared to work hard, consistently.” explained Giselle Brogan (Year 9).

Coach Granger was equally impressed with our young people “Great group of kids! Their attitudes were good, they applied themselves with good energy, and it’s good to see schools like BMGS taking sport seriously. There are just so many opportunities for young people moving into their adult lives, through sport nowadays.”

Students who attended also received free t-shirts and will receive free tickets to both Sydney Flames and Kings games.

These clinics were a resounding success from all perspectives!
