Principal's Report

by Helen Freeman

We enjoyed a major celebration last Friday, 100 days of school for all our delightful Foundation students. The theme was Mario Party as the students raced their way to 100 days of school. The students were engaged in a range of classroom activities and a party. Thank you to our wonderful Foundation team for organising this special memorable event.

Capital Works Update

There has been more action on the site over the past weeks. They have added the plumbing spots, you can now see where the students’ toilets will be and other wet areas in the building. The underground electrical points have now been completed. The concreter’s preparation work is almost complete ready for the first concrete pour, planned for next Thursday. There are three concrete slabs, and they will be undertaking these sequentially across the site.

As there will be a stream of cement trucks delivering the concrete on the selected days, I will be notifying parents and students in advance that they will need to use the Vasey Street or Doynton Parade gates when arriving and leaving school on these days.

Digital Technology

As part of the school’s Digital Learning Policy in particular the school’s commitment to promoting safe, responsible, and discerning use of digital technologies by our students we invited Senior Sargent Jaclyn Mahood from the Proactive Policing Unit to come and speak to the Year 5 and 6 students last Thursday. I joined the Year 6 students for their session. Jaclyn clearly covered the positives and the negatives that students must be aware of when using in particular social media platforms. The students had the opportunity to asks questions. We are currently planning a parent session on the same topic, when this is finalised I will forward the information onto parents of students in Years 4, 5 and 6.

2023 Parents / caregivers / guardians survey

Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents / caregivers / guardians think of our school. The Parent / Caregiver / Guardian Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education that is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour, and student engagement. The survey is optional, but we encourage all families to participate. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.

All parents/caregivers/guardians are invited to participate in this year’s survey. The Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey will be open from Monday, 14th August to Friday, 8th September 2023. A direct link to the survey will be sent to parents, carers, and guardians via Compass on Monday.

The survey will be conducted online, only takes 20 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the survey period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in English and 10 other languages.

Science Week

We have two exciting special events planned for the whole school to celebrate Science Week. The first is The Mad Science Show incursion which will be a whole school event on Wednesday 16th August. This show is a thrilling demonstration of physics and chemistry suited to primary age students. The second whole school event will be a Family Science Afternoon on Thursday 17th August from 2:15 - 3:15pm. This session has been planned by classroom teachers to be a hands-on science experiment. Parents are welcome to attend this session to join in the fun! We kindly ask that parents refrain from taking photos or videos during this session.

Pupil Free Day

Finally, a reminder that next Friday 18th August is our Pupil Free day. The teachers will be working with Dr Ange Rogers on Numeracy. Ange is a former Primary School Teacher, Numeracy Leader and Numeracy Intervention teacher. She is passionate about Maths Education and currently works part-time at RMIT University in Melbourne. She also has an online mentoring and PD program called the Numeracy Teachers Academy.

Have a great fortnight!
