Careers & Pathways

Work Experience Week

During term two, one week was dedicated to Work Experience which took place on Monday 19th of June, and finished on Friday 23rd of June 2023. More than a hundred Year 10 students from Tarneit Senior College participated in Work Experience. It was an exciting opportunity for our students to gain practical skills in a work setting. Work Experience provided students with a valuable opportunity to develop employability skills, explore possible career options, and understand employer expectations. Work Experience increases self-understanding, maturity, and self-confidence.

Our amazing Year 10 students who participated in Work Experience Week during Term 2 went to the local cafes and supermarkets like Coles and Woolworths, schools like Tarneit P-9 and Tarneit Rise Primary School, and small businesses. Please, find below the student's feedback about their work experience:

My work experience was great. It was an amazing experience, learning how things work behind the scenes. Many kind co-workers helped me and made my stay there a comfortable and fun time. It helped me learn new skills and build on the skills I already know, such as my organisation. I learned how to correctly stack products on shelves and how to make some of Coles's bakery products. At the end of my work experience, the store manager said if I needed a job I could contact him, so yes it did help with finding myself a job. Overall work experience was a good learning opportunity and it was something "different" so it was great.

The work experience was pretty fun, everybody there was kind, and I've learned how they take calls and make appointments for the patients. A Doctor also allowed me to see the procedure on how they treat dry eyes with a special machine and showed me examples of dry and healthy eyes. I mainly checked for mail, stamped letters that needed to be sent to other doctors, and texted patients regarding their appointment. Overall, I enjoyed this experience and I believe I can get a job with this knowledge.

My work experience was great!

The environment was very positive, and you could tell everybody loved and cared about each other.

I consider myself very lucky to have worked where I did as I learned a lot about the different types of tiles/timber and how and when the orders get put in, how they get from being an order to being sent to the warehouse, and eventually being set out. While for most of the days, I finished off all their filing, they still took time out of their day to teach me about the system and to show me around the warehouse as well as their timber and tile showroom.

I was told by most of my coworkers that they wanted me to come in once a month just to help them out with their filing. Though I don't think I would have the time to come in, much to their disappointment.

Overall I did enjoy the experience and I'm grateful to have worked in the place that I did.
