Year 11 Chemistry

Year 11 Chemistry students conducted a series of acid-metal reactions and gathered qualitative data for analysis. Students were investigating the chemical changes that occurred within each reaction while comparing the differences in the products of each.

Moving forward, students will take this experience and apply it to their future learning, as we will soon be looking at amphiprotic solutions and conducting pH tests to determine acidity levels in everyday household items. Students will also get the opportunity to apply their knowledge outside of the classroom and into the real world, as we explore the pH levels necessary to maintain life in our local rivers and waterways.

In week three, the year 11s conducted a practical where they investigated the reactions of acids with different compounds, to identify their products.

From this, we wrote balanced equations. We also conducted pop tests and lime water tests to identify whether hydrogen gas or carbon dioxide was emitted. It was an interesting and fun investigation that displayed our understanding of acids and bases.
