Secondary Life

CAW

Hannah McRae - CAW Coordinator

Congratulations to everyone who participated in Creative Arts Week 2023. This year the theme was ‘100 Years of Disney,’ where students had to create a performance using two Disney musicals as inspiration.

House groups did a marvellous job of reinventing the stories and bringing their characters, themes and settings to life. The scripts were wonderfully written, and the performances were a pleasure to watch. Each House group worked extremely hard to produce a 20-minute drama performance involving acting, dancing, costumes, music, media and some very interesting sets and props! It was great to see so many people involved from Year 7 to Year 12.

Congratulations to Anji Tulk and Sanne Bakker and the team from Cuthbert A who took out the Best Drama Award for ‘101 Dalmatians in 1930’s New Orleans’, as well as Laetitia Clements and her team from Burrows A for their Best Script for their production of ‘Lady and the Tramp in the Scandinavian Snow’. Well done also to everyone who submitted a piece to our CAW competitions.

I would also like to extend a big thank you and congratulations to all the House Captains for their energy and enthusiasm throughout the term and during Creative Arts Week.

Well done to Laetitia Clements, Camiel Bowler, Tahlia Sortino, Noah Sharwood, Anji Tulk, Zac Ferguson, Juliette Durand and Ezekiel Wong.

Thank you for entering into the spirit of the Arts and for the way that you got your entire house involved.

Our Arts Captains, Alex White and Joel Molyneux, did a stellar job of hosting the week and engaging the audience throughout the all-in sessions.

Well done to everyone involved!

Until next year…

Interschool Debating

Meg Davies - Head of English

Interschool Debating was an exacting commitment for our two debating teams. Our teams, composed of mostly Year 8 students, have been competing in D grade with Year 9 students from other schools.

This year's team was composed of new debaters and graduates of the Junior Secondary Program from Year 7. They debated schools such as Tintern Grammar, Yarra Valley Grammar, Catholic Ladies' College and Luther College.

Topics ranged from compulsory participation in extracurricular activities, funding arts and sports, to those with broader importance like uranium mining and the retirement age in Australia.

Through the five rounds, our team improved their argumentation, persuasiveness and rebuttal skills. What's most pleasing was the development in confidence, teamwork and resilience through many challenges. We can be proud of how our debaters have grown through their experience while representing DCC in the important field of debating.

The debating team members are Adriel Chen, Tiffany Guo, Leila Griffiths, Emma Lau, Dora Pan, Elise Ridgway. With assistance from Patrick Silk, Jayden Yu and Alston Jerome.

Well done for your fine work this year!

Computer Thinking Competition

Michael Llewellyn - Maths Teacher

Early in Term 2, students from years 7, 8 and 9 participated in the Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition from the Australian Maths Trust. This consisted of a series of questions that relate to coding and computer science skills.

Four of those students received a Distinction certificate, placing them in the top 15% of the State. Congratulations to:

  • Caleb Hood in Year 7
  • Alicia Lam in Year 8
  • Adriel Chen in Year 8
  • Elise Ridgway in Year 8 (Who also achieved the best result in the school!)
