HASS field trip

A1GEO Depth Study One

ATAR Geography excursion

The Year 11 ATAR Geography class spend Thursday, 10 March in the Mundaring Hills, participating in fieldwork and activities on the impacts of bushfires and the way we mitigate them. Students met Mike from Parks and Wildlife at the Perth Hills Discovery Centre where they learnt about the events that led to the devastating bushfires of Parkerville in 2014.

Out in the bush, students studied leaf litter quantities and canopy cover to assess risk and compared slope and aspect in a recently burnt area verses an unburnt area. After lunch, students assessed the human landscape where buildings and surrounds were analysed for preparedness, mitigation and prevention of bushfire hazards.

The students had an amazing opportunity to put their classroom skills to practice in the field. Thank you to Mr Aaron McGoorty for driving the bus. It was a hot but educational day out in the “real world” for our Geographers.
