Reef research

Marine biology at Mettam's Pool

On Wednesday, 23 February, the Year 11 Integrated Science students attended an excursion to Mettam's Pool near Trigg Beach as part of their Marine Biology course.

While at the beach they were required to set up reef transects and walk through the rough water to record both abiotic and biotic information under the guidance of education officers from WA Fisheries Department. Even though the conditions were less than ideal to record data for their reef transects, students were still able to participate and collect data.

After lunch, students moved on to the WA Fisheries & Marine Research Laboratories where they participated in activities that covered different sampling techniques used in the management of marine resources. This was followed by a smelly fish dissection and other activities focused on sustainability of fishing resources.

Special thanks to Mrs Robinson for driving the students to the excursion and for her assistance in the supervision of the activities.
