The Newlands Spiral Launch!

We are incredibly excited to launch the Newlands Spiral to families next week! What does that mean? You will receive your child’s learning goals for Writing next week!

Over the last 12 months, Newlands has been building a program named the ‘Newlands Spiral’ which allows teachers to collect student data, identify goals and monitor learning progress to ensure we are targeting the specific needs of our students. A significant component of the ‘Newlands Spiral’ is to provide families with ongoing information about their child’s learning, through specific learning goals.

Families will receive an email that indicates their child’s next learning goal, accompanied by the skills that will need to be demonstrated in order for their child to successfully achieve the goal. This goal will also be communicated to students in class and will be supported by teachers.

You will receive an updated individual Writing goal email every four weeks to coincide with the teachers planning cycle, alongside your child’s most recent achievements.

The school will begin to share learning goals in other subjects, such as Mathematics, which will be sent out in Week 10.

Below is an example of how the email you receive will look:

To coincide with this, you will receive detailed information about your child in relation to the Victorian Curriculum standards to understand their strengths and opportunities of growth as demonstrated below:

Each statement sits under the Department of Education Victorian Curriculum standards and will indicate previous, current and future learning.

Each statement is highlighted in a colour. Green indicates that your child continually demonstrates the learning statement, red indicates that they are developing their understanding and black means that it is future learning.

We would like to thank Graeme who has spent copious amounts of hours outside of the school to develop this software and to support the creation and implementation of our vision.

We are really excited to be sharing this for the first time and know that this will be a significant tool to not only bridge the gap between the classroom and home, but an opportunity to celebrate and support your child’s learning.

Thanks, Newlands

Please Note:

Our staff has refined the Newlands Learning Continuum against the Victorian Curriculum in 2022. The 2022 learning statements provide further clarity of the expectations at each year level and will be presented in your child’s semester reports. These changes will ensure that the teaching and learning continues to be explicit and our family community have a stronger understanding of what their child’s next step in their learning is.

This may mean that some statements may appear red in their previous Year level. This could mean that your child may not have been assessed against this criteria or your child has not demonstrated the skill in their learning.

Please note this our first attempt at moving to this platform and we are aware that their may be some inconsistencies that we will continue to refine.
