End of Term Reflection from the Acting Assistant Principals

This term as been a long whirlwind of activities. It was a pleasure to welcome all of our students back to school and to be able to resume usual excursions, camps and classroom activities.  Our SRC returned to full capacity, leading fundraisers, running clubs and supporting our school events outside of the usual school hours.

We are also so proud of how our students have returned to the classrooms this year full of excitement and enthusiasm. They have had a wonderful term of learning and developing relationships with their teachers and peers.

Our senior students have settled into our new campus well and it great to have them participating in our Smoking Ceremony last week to officially open the campus.

We would also like to thank all of our staff, students and the community in supporting us in our acting assistant principal roles this term. It has been a surprising turn of events that has led us to be in these positions.

We would like to wish all families a safe, restful and happy holidays period. Take care of yourselves and we look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday April 26th for Term 2!

2022 Collingwood College Athletics Carnival

On Thursday 7th April we held our Annual Collingwood College Yr 5 – Yr10 Athletics Carnival in glorious sunshine at Collingwood Harriers Athletics Club.

What an amazing day – perfect weather conditions, fantastic competition and superb Collingwood College participation. Students participated in up to five events throughout the day. Every event was closely fought for the prize of winning the ‘blue ribbon’.

Throughout the day there were 100’s of sausages cooked and cinnamon doughnuts eaten to replenish reserves for competitors to run, throw and jump their way to success.

A BIG thank you to all students who made their way from one event to another and then found the time to cheer on their friends from the sidelines.

Congratulations to Banksia (Red) House were the overall 2022 House winners scoring 198 points with Eucalyptus (Green) 2nd    194 points,  Blue Gum (Blue) 3rd  173 points and Wattle (Yellow) 4th    162 points.

The last event of the day was the Teacher V Students 60m skipping relay race. Another very close race from start to finish was won by THE TEACHERS again (I think)!!!!!

Here are some photos of the Athletics Carnival:

On behalf of the Collingwood College HPE Team – thank you and see you soon.

The SRC are happy to report that on Thursday, 31 March we finally watched our Collingwood College Students Showcase some of their many talents. Congratulations to the students who bravely took to the stage and strutted their stuff. There was singing galore, musical instruments played beautifully, Martial Arts confidently executed and students bursting to the brim with enthusiasm.

The winner was Juniper from Class 5.

SRC School Council March Report

*speech from School Council Meeting

Hello everyone.

My name is Tadhg Bryant and I am one of the two Collingwood College SRC Captains for 2022. Teo Djuric is the other. We are both very happy and privileged to have these positions and are going to work very hard to continue the great legacy of the Collingwood College SRC. We have both been active members of the SRC in earlier years and are very excited to be given this Leadership role of representing the Student Voice at Collingwood College.

We have started the year with a great group of keen students who have met every week and who are very eager to support the school any way they can. We began with a Training Day on February 18th at St Phillips’ Anglican church, where all elected members of the SRC, (ranging from year 3/4 to year 10) spent a day participating in motivational, collaborative team building exercises, discussions of the importance and the role of the SRC, as well as setting achievable goals for the year. Liria and Emily were in attendance that day and we were honoured to have a great motivational speaker, Robert Malpeli.

This year we have invited the new Environmental Captains and House Captains to attend the weekly SRC meetings and present a short report of other events around the school, connected and overseen by them.

SRC students assisted the teachers early in the day with the setting up at the Fitzroy pool for our annual Swimming Sports. We then went on to supply sausages and other foods and shared a roster where all SRC students participated in the fundraising of the day.

With the resumption of the weekly Thursday Community market, the SRC have been selling ice cream to raise funds for charity. These funds will be allotted to charities that SRC members feel they would like to support. Every week money is raised and it is great to see different student members helping out and doing their bit.

We also assisted the students on the Year 7 City Camp by providing a cooked, hot breakfast for the students after they had spent the night sleeping on campus.

Open Day was an important day for Collingwood College and the SRC were very happy to volunteer and show parents how much they cared for their school. The students shared their thoughts and answered parents directly and honestly.

Last week we organised a Talent Quest for the school community and it was received very warmly by everyone. Due to Covid restrictions we have not had one for the last two years, so we were really happy to stage this whole school event. The acts were fun and highlights included one of newest members of staff impressing a screaming audience with his ball skills. The winner was Juniper from grade 5 with her wonderful singing.

This week, in our last week of the term, we are looking forward to working on another BBQ and supplying food at the Athletics Sports.  On the first day back in second term (Tuesday 26th of April) we will hopefully be conducting an Anzac Day Assembly in the theatre to commemorate the importance of Anzac Day. We are sure there will be many more events, challenges and commitments for the SRC ahead, and we look forward to meeting all of them.

Community Liaison Officers helping Collingwood College to build positive connections with students and families of African background

Badria, Hussein & Hassen
Badria, Hussein & Hassen

Collingwood College's Community Liaison Officers work with students and families of African heritage in order to develop positive connections. Collingwood College has a student population of 823 students with a high number of students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds (CALD).

Over 34 languages are spoken within the school community, and many students have only recently arrived in Australia with refugee status.

In 2020 Hassen Mohamed-Saeed, Badria Mustafa and Hussein Ibrahim joined the school as Community Liaison Officers working as part of the school’s wellbeing team.

These new roles were established to help build strong and positive connections with students and families of African background.

Since the African Community Liaisons became onboard; it is widely noticed the connection between  the school and the African school community/students has been greater than ever before. The African community feels a sense of representation at the school and communicated in a language they understand.
