Year 9 & 10 Happenings

Year 9 students have been busy undertaking a series of short questionnaires and quizzes to complete their Morrisby Profile.  These have incorporated their talents, motivations, personality and work preferences. The Morrisby Profile is used as a tool to inspire and give students some feedback on their strengths and interests, and how to find career and study options that might suit them.  At the start of next term, a first-round group of students will meet with visiting Career Consultants – the next step in the Morrisby profiling process – and undertake a 30-minute interview based on their Morrisby report.  These interviews will continue to take place throughout the term.

The Morrisby Profile, once completed, is a useful resource that students can reference at any time, now and in the future.  Recently, Year 10 students reviewed their Morrisby report in preparation for interviews with their Careers/HG teachers where they reflected on what they learned about themselves and possible future career options.  Now students are thinking about work experience which will take place in Term 3.

This week, all Year 10 students visited the Wurun Campus for a tour of our new state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities. This was a great transition exercise and introduced our students to the exciting atmosphere of the senior campus. At the end of the session, a student-led assembly was held in the Atrium where captains reported on events and achievements that took place throughout the term.  All students involved are thanked for their amazing efforts to make this a special Year 10 event!  I am very proud of them!

I wish all Year 9&10 students a safe holiday.

Year 10 School Captains Report

Year 8 Interschool Cricket

As a house captain, I was tasked with the job of coaching the year eight boys interschool cricket team. It has been a great opportunity for the boys to expand their sporting ability and knowledge. Aaron and I ran training sessions every Wednesday lunchtime that included a wide range of drills to focus on enhancing their pre-learned skills. On the third of March, our team competed in the first round of the inter-school sports cricket competition. With a total of two games, we won both of our matches and will now be proceeding into the next round. It was an exceptional effort from everybody who was involved. A special shoutout to Osgar who knocked it out of the park with an all-time high score of 75 runs. We are all very proud of his amazing achievement. I am very grateful to have been involved in the cricket team and I hope that other students will want to step up into either interschool sports or coaching positions. This experience has led me into pursuing a part time job in umpiring cricket. I believe that it’s important to include as many girls as we can into the next interschool sports team seeing as I was the only girl who was volunteering. I hope to see some new students writing their names down in future!

Interschool Volleyball

Throughout this term as a house captain I have had the opportunity to coach the Collingwood College volleyball team for Interschool Sports. My experience of doing this has been great as I was able to build on my communication skills and interact with the team, and help develop their skills in volleyball through a short period of time. I was also able to help the team do their best in their competition. Throughout lunchtimes the team would have practice and I would go and

help out - they improved so much throughout this.

Swimming - Moreland Division

After last month's school swimming carnival, I was presented with the opportunity to compete in the Moreland Division interschool swimming, representing Collingwood College. It was a fun day where I was able to meet new people from other schools and participate in some healthy competition. From each event the top two swimmers progress through to the next round where they can continue to compete until the final stage, the National level. I was fortunate enough to finish in the top two swimmers for my events, however was not able to compete at the next round (Regional) as I was on my Year 10 Farming Camp. I would highly recommend participating in an interschool sport activity. If there are any interschool sport events you are interested in this year, you can let me or one of the other house captains know and we can speak to the PE staff.

Green Team

In Green Team, there are representatives from each primary school class from grade 3 and up, and all high school students are welcome to attend our meetings every Friday lunch time. This year we are focusing specifically on Doing Waste Better at Collingwood College, but are open to any projects regarding caring for the environment and saving our planet.

This term the Green Team have a few exciting things to share about our project. In the first few weeks of term, we were visited by some members of the Yarra City Council, who assisted us with conducting a waste audit at the school. This helped us to find the key elements of our school’s waste, and assess which bins we need to purchase to correctly dispose of rubbish at school. Recently, we began surveying what bins we currently have, what bins we need, and where in the school we need more bins. Once we finish the bin audit, we will be ready to order our recycling and rubbish bins.

Last week, Kym from Rethink Recycling, and Meredith and Bec from Yarra Climate Action Now (YCAN) came to talk with the Green Team. Rethink Recycling is a co-op that is driving the recycling of plastic that otherwise goes into landfill - like plastic bottle lids - and is inspiring change through community education. In the future, they plan to have bottle lid collection stations around the City of Yarra and we hope to have one at our school as well! The people from YCAN told us about a project where there is a possibility for our students to participate in. This project is painting a Climate mural on a large wall facing Hoddle Street, just down the road from the school. The idea is to represent the community through displaying a Climate Message in a public space that will be seen by many people.

Throughout the term we have been talking to the school's kitchen garden program about how they manage their compost and discussing how we can create a system for composting the rest of the school’s food waste. We hope to introduce compost cones throughout the school grounds which will be accessible for all students during break times.
