Week 6 Term 1

Literacy

In writing we have been working on generating and organising our ideas. Often we hear 'I don't know what to write', so planning for writing is so important. We've also started looking at how we can capture our audiences attention through the use of 'sizzling starts'. A sizzling start is used to 'hook' the reader in and make them want to keep reading. A sizzling start begins at the best bit and an author will often use action, humour, dialogue, intrigue or change to hook in the reader.

Below the children are brianstorming words, actions and sounds they might be able to use for different story prompts. The prompts were: The night the power went out, The birthday party and Our excursion to the zoo.

In reading we have been talking about the importance of a 'good fit book'. Making independent choices on the books we read is an important step at developing our learner agency. Last week in library we discussed selecting two books; one for enjoyment and one for learning. A book 'for learning' is one we can read in class to further develop our reading skills (or bring home to read nightly - see 'diaries' below) and our reading for enjoyment book is when we can either read at home or school for fun.

Education in Faith

The season of Lent has now begun and we begin to focus our energy on how we can make good choices through prayer, almsgiving and fasting. In class we will certainly be talking about these three important pillars in our faith. Attached is something you may like to place on the fridge or noticeboard and tick of some good deeds during the 40 days of Lent.

Camp Manyung (15th-16th March)

Thank you to everyone who returned the camp form on time. In the coming week we will be having a number of class meetings with the children where we will share some photos and videos of previous camps and give them a feel for some of the great things we will do on both of the days. Tomorrow (Friday 4th) a further camp notice will come home with more details and a list of what to pack! Please give me a call at school or a message via Seesaw if you have any questions.

Diaries

Sorry for the delay in the getting the diaries home this year! They will be coming home this week and will be used to keep track of nightly reading and other small homework tasks across each week. I would love to see parents checking the nightly reading and signing the diaries on a regular basis. Nightly reading is so important and we expect all children to read at home daily for approximately 20 minutes. Your routine may involve reading before bed, straight after school, or before dinner. Do what works for you! Not all children will be bringing home a levelled reader as they may have done in Prep-2, so monitor what your child is reading and if you have any concerns please let me know.

Enjoy your week!
