Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

Last weekend saw Marist win all three premier matches against St Patrick’s College. Excitedly our Chess 1st IV are still undefeated and take on powerhouse St Laurence’s College this Friday afternoon in the biggest chess match for a few years. With rugby playing (and winning) midweek, enjoying a bumper crowd at McMahon Oval after school, the 1st XI was the main attraction on Saturday and the boys did not disappoint in front of a large and vocal support on Cameron Oval, winning 3-1 in a good team performance.

Cross Country

Good luck to our Cross Country team who head out to Curlew Park on Wednesday to represent the College in the 25th AIC Cross Country Championship. Marist has a long and proud history in cross country, winning 13 of the 24 events held to date, and the last six in a row. We wish the boys all the very best and thank all the staff involved in the program, led by Mr Mitch Reid, Coordinator, Mr Shane Ward, Head Coach and Mr John Lambourne, Head of Sport Primary.

Routines

As we get closer to the end of term and assessment pressure starts to build and boys are feeling a little bit stressed in juggling their commitments it is important to remember that boys thrive on routine. If you are used to training on a Monday afternoon then that is what you should be doing, even if you have an exam on the Tuesday. Exercise and fresh air are great stress relievers. If boys are feeling overwhelmed, please contact your coach and year co-ordinator in advance to explain why you are going to miss training.

Finish Well

With a couple of weeks to go, I remind all boys playing football and rugby to maintain your discipline and focus on the task at hand. Marist men should not retaliate, regardless of the provocation, and should never be the instigator of poor behaviour. We win and lose with respect for the opponent, officials, ourselves, and the game. The AIC has some guiding principles in our vision as a competition that we want to “develop good and healthy young people of character through sport and competition within a Christian context.” This goes for spectators as well. I have received lots of positive emails and reports where our boys have done positive things, but one incident can paint us all in a bad light so let’s finish hard and with respect and dignity.

Representative Selection Process

Marist is a committed member of North-West Independent District and Metropolitan North School Sport Region. Wherever possible we support boys with aspirations of representing their district, region, or state.

There is a significant amount of paperwork, with forms, including Principal permission, required at each level of selection. When the College receives notice of a district trial the sports office advertises the trial on the College App and in the daily notices. Boys or parents are then asked to nominate by providing details to the sports email address before the due date. We then nominate the players to the district convenor or secretary who informs us on whether there is a district trial required or straight through to Met North trials, and issues us the paperwork. We will then communicate those details along with the signed Principal permission form for that trial to the boys. The sports office notifies student absentees of the dates the student will be absent, and parents are required to log the absence on the day as well through Parent Lounge.

Where boys make the Met North or Queensland teams the paperwork for those is sent direct to the family. The Principal permission form needs to be brought to the sports office for approval and signing, and again, the sports office notifies student absentees of the dates the student will be absent and parents are required to log the absence on the day through Parent Lounge.

Orienteering

The SE Queensland All Schools Orienteering trials are on Sunday 4th June. Orienteering is a competitive international sport that combines racing with navigation. Participants use very detailed maps to select routes and navigate through diverse and often unfamiliar terrain in the fastest time.

More information about orienteering in Queensland can be found at https://oq.orienteering.asn.au/ or by emailing admin@oq.asn.au.

Football

Mr Derek Lennon - Football Coordinator

Our second home round of the season proved to be another strong set of fixtures for Marist. With almost all teams playing at home, it was a great atmosphere on Cameron Oval with big support for the 1st XI game.

Overall, we had 13 wins and 7 losses and 2 draws against St Patrick’s College. So far this season we have won the day overall in each of the five rounds played to date in a positive showing for the depth of the Marist football program. Our toughest challenge lies ahead this weekend with Lauries on the Old Boys Day at Runcorn, but we take them on full of confidence and an assurance that we are in a good position.

The 1st XI enjoyed a comfortable 3-1 victory with SPC scoring a consolation goal with the last kick of the game. The best start of the season from Marist saw us 2-nil up early and the game was comfortably managed by the boys from there. It was a solid team performance with everyone contributing and the team continuing to grow in confidence each week. Lauries will be a challenge, no doubt, but the game is there for us if we are good enough.

There are no games at home this weekend with the vast majority playing at Runcorn, which will be the focus of attention before we return home in Round 7, where most teams will be playing at Ashgrove.

Referee Course – Opportunity

Marist is hosting a Football Queensland referee course on Wednesday 21 June at the College.

This is open to all boys 12 years and older. This is free for students.

We are hoping to develop a pool of student referees that we can appoint to school games. You will also be qualified to register with Football Queensland to referee club matches throughout the year. Student referees are paid by the College for refereeing school matches. You do not need to be currently playing football for the college, but you do need to have a sound understanding of the game. To be eligible to register for the course you must complete the free online Laws of the Game course.

Track and Field

Mr Richard Graham – Director of Rugby / Track and Field

Mr Rob Martin – Head Coach, Track and Field

Sunday Sessions

A reminder to ANY students wishing to be involved in the Marist College Track and Field program, Sunday afternoon sessions have now begun.

Head Coach, Mr Rob Martin has overseen the past three Sunday sessions and will continue to oversee the start of the College’s preparation as a lead into the House Carnival and the Track and Field season.

WHEN: Sunday afternoons

WHERE: Hayden Oval

TIME: 3:15pm-4:45pm

DRESS CODE: Marist sport clothing

If you have any questions, please contact Mr Richard Graham.

House Carnival

The Marist College Secondary School Track and Field Carnival is one of the best events in Term 2. Held on Friday 16 June, the House Carnival is a combination of competitive events and novelty activities.

For those wishing to challenge for the Age Champion or compete in an individual event, the House Carnival offers the opportunity to start the Track and Field season in a well-organised and competitive meet. This year the College has enlisted the support of Timing Solutions to provide the most accurate times for the running races, whilst supporting the upload of data from all events.

For those students wishing to compete in only some traditional Track and Field events or potentially none at all, the College offers range of novelty events so all students have the opportunity to participate across the day.

Given the large logistical challenges to ensure the event runs smoothly, Heads of House and the Sports Captains will shortly be collecting names for specific events.

Some events will take place in the week leading into the carnival. All students will be made aware before time to allow for those students to attend.

John Nunan Athletics Precinct

The John Nunan Athletics Precinct is almost complete, however, it is still not available for use by students or outside visitors.

As we continue to complete the last few details, unless invited by Head Coach, Mr Rob Martin, could I ask everyone to stay away from the tartan track and long jump pit areas.

Rugby Union

Mr Richard Graham – Director of Rugby / Track and Field

Round 5 vs St Pat’s

Well done on a week of rugby union that saw the 1st XV play on Wednesday afternoon and the remainder of the school play on Saturday.

Thanks to all the Marist supporters who stayed at or came to the College to support the 1st XV. The support was unbelievable - boisterous, supportive, constant!! The outstanding atmosphere was a genuine point of difference.

The College had some wonderful wins and played in some tough contests across Saturday. Our game model of “physical attacking rugby” was evident to those watching from McMahon Oval down to Des Connor Park, Field 8 where we played against a range of opposition schools.

One game I would like to highlight is the Marist 9E vs Marist 8E match. A jersey presentation for the 9E’s and a pep talk to the 8E’s. Thank you to all the students who embraced the opportunity and played the game in the right spirit.

Finally, it was wonderful to see the 1st XV at the College from the first game of the day supporting the Year 5 and 6 teams on Hayden Oval and McMahon Oval. The students themselves have worked hard on connecting with the teams from each year level, and this was an important day for them. Whether it was organising the tunnel, helping with warm ups, running water, or just cheering from the sidelines, every little bit helps to make the connection in our rugby union program that much stronger. Well done!

Round 6 vs St Laurence’s

The second last round, our last away fixture, and a massive day of rugby union will see our students play St Laurence’s College at Runcorn this Saturday.  It is also St Laurence’s Old Boy’s Day and is sure to be a fantastic day of rugby union against one of our greatest rivals.

A number of teams will be hoping to keep their unbeaten record intact or hoping to get one up against St Laurence’s. Please join us in what is a very good day at Runcorn.

Not only is it a wonderful day for students from every Year level, but it is also the traditional Old Boy’s touch game – Marist vs SLC prior to the 1st XV match. Plenty of old Marist College students from a range of teams coming together to take on the Black and Gold.

Tennis

Mr Andrew Ward - Director of Tennis

AIC Team Selections and Trials

We Need You to Be a Part of History

Yes, that is correct, we need players from Years 9 and 10 who can play this season for the school. If you can play, we would be honoured to have you trial for the team. We are in short supply of players for Year 9 in particular and hope there are some boys who would love to represent the school and receive free tennis coaching along the way. All year levels have had good support so far and we are on track to release our trial teams and list of reserves on Thursday 16 or Friday 17 June.

It has come to my attention that some boys who are good at tennis have decided not to play this season. While I respect your decision, I also urge you to please reconsider and be a part of your year level. With tennis at the point of overtaking all AIC teams, we need you more than ever to win the school overall aggregate. Losing players from our A teams is not going to win it for Marist, only deplete our teams in standard. For this to happen we need all good players to play tennis and not change sports. This has been sad to see in our last year's championship-winning team who are in Year 8 this year. Also, some players from Year 9. Please do not be pressured by mates to change sports for Term 3. Have the courage to say no.

Thank you for your time and hopefully, with your help and participation, we can all be a part of history in derailing the hold St Peters has had on the aggregate trophy for the past eight years of it being held.
