Hospitality

Kees Vanderlaan - Hospitality and Food Technology Learning Coordinator

We are almost halfway through the year and there is a lot going on in 2023!

Students enrolled in Ms Jeffree’s junior Food Technology classes and the introduction of the OZ Harvest ‘Feast’ program, have been busy learning about “Use it up" food solutions, whilst trying to do their bit in living sustainably. Ms Cardinaletti has joined the team for this year (Years 7 and 8) and will be training and providing opportunities for our 2023 Teen Chef student team to take part in the Teen Chef competition in August. The Community Garden is getting some much-needed love, ready for some winter vegetables and fresh herbs. Hopefully with some good weather this year we will be able to get the community garden back into full swing.

VET Kitchen Operations/Cookery (Ms Hall/Chef Kirsty) and Hospitality (Ms Haider) students are doing a fantastic job, applying their newly acquired skills in the Graduates’ Restaurant. It will be a great year ahead for our VET students to manage, serve and cook in the Graduates’ training restaurant, including hosting our popular ‘Christmas in June’ services (fully booked out!), with students and staff not holding back on effort and enthusiasm! She is also training her team of students (two) to take part in the Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge, hosted at St John’s in June.

Recently, our second year VET students enjoyed an excursion to the restaurant precinct on the Yarra River Boulevard, culminating in a Hotel tour and buffet lunch at Melba’s, Langham Hotel.

The Patisserie team has been busy practicing their skills too, and pastries, cakes and breads have been created by students in the course. Every meal in the Graduates’ Restaurant is accompanied by freshly bakes bread rolls and biscuits served with coffee.

VCE VM - Ms Haider and Mr Almery have been busy facilitating our VM students, getting ready to re-launch the Lantern Café. On Friday 26 May, the Lantern Café will play host to our VM students' invited guests, whilst students themselves will be putting on a show (Morning Tea). More ideas are being developed, so keep an eye on this VCE VM space!
