5-8 Community News

Dear Families/Caregivers,

It has been another busy fortnight for our students who continue to work and persist with their learning outcomes!  The students continue to read, write and spell each morning with many of the year levels coming to the end of their class novel for the term!

Students in each year level have read the following texts:

Wonder - Year 5

Esperanza Rising - Year 6

The Giver - Year 7

Animal Farm - Year 8

The Schoolmaster's Daughter - 7-9 Partnerships

The Resilience Project content and language continue to provide our students with opportunities to practice gratitude at home and at school.

Students have been unpacking the positives and negatives with technology use especially from their own context. Students have examined the guidelines for some of their own applications they use in the classroom. Here are examples of some guidelines that we are all expected to follow when we use social media.

  1. Be mindful of tone
  2. Use polite language
  3. Listen actively
  4. Avoid personal attacks
  5. Give constructive feedback
  6. Be patient and understanding
  7. Respect privacy and boundaries
  8. Fact-check and cite sources
  9. Take responsibility for mistakes
  10. Disengage if necessary

From a SOLE perspective, we are unpacking the strategies we can use to have respectful conversations with our peers and our teachers. Lately, the staff have been asking the question: how does open and positive communication contribute to personal well-being? Our students and staff have been unpacking what this question actually means through finding alternative solutions and strategies to use that contribute to positive communication.

Our basketball competition on a Monday has kicked off again in the Brigidine Centre. We have over 40 kids participating in lunchtime activities. This is a wonderful achievement and shows how much our kids not only value sport, but the opportunity to play team-based sports with their class peers. It's been so good to see so many kids take that step and commit to an activity, even though we are blessed to have a variety of new spaces in the yard. The soccer goals! WOW! and the use of the Rec Reserve!  Tech Club is occurring each Wednesday in the Partnerships space and the library is open for some quieter activities!

Keep it up guys!

And lastly, please continue to ensure that if your child is out of uniform, a note is provided to their TA teacher.  As we welcome the colder months, please ensure that you are taking a trip to the uniform shop in Kyabram to purchase a school jumper or jacket. College beanies and scarves are available to purchase from the College Office.
