FAITH LIFE INQUIRY

CONFIRMATION

Tonight is a very special night in the lives of many of our Year Six students and their families. After many hours of preparation, they will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation at mass. Confirmation is one of the Initiation Sacraments of the Catholic Church and helps the candidates to be united more firmly with Christ. Please keep the candidates and their families in your prayers.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Spirit of wisdom and understanding,

enlighten our minds to perceive the mysteries

of the universe in relation to eternity.

Spirit of right judgment and courage, guide

us and make us firm in our baptismal decision

to follow Jesus' way of love.

Spirit of knowledge and reverence,

help us to see the lasting value of justice and mercy

in our everyday dealings with one another.

May we respect life as we work to solve problems

of family and nation, economy and ecology.

Spirit of God, spark our faith, hope and love

into new action each day.

Fill our lives with wonder and awe in your presence,

which penetrates all creation.

Amen.

Year 1 and Year 2 Class Mass

Reminder that the Year 1 class mass was postponed to Friday 26th May.  They will be celebrating with the Year 2 students.  We hope to see our family and friends there if you can make it!

Altar Servers at Sacred Heart

Father Binh has visited with the Year 4 and 5 students to discuss the opportunity of Altar Serving at the School Masses. If this is something that is of interest to your child, please email Cath at cpalmer@shnewport.catholic.edu.au

Prep - Year 6 LEARNING UPDATES

Class Learning Updates inform our families of the learning and teaching that will be happening in each learning area of the Curriculum for the following two weeks.

Our aim is to keep our families informed of their child's learning and events that are happening in the classroom.  This also may support meaningful conversations about school when your child comes home from school.  Learning updates are published on Seesaw fortnightly.  Keep a lookout!

Mathematics

Teaching and Learning in Mathematics

Currently in the Prep and Year 1 and 2 levels students have been building their skills in addition. Addition is the first big mathematical step after learning number sense.

The Prep students are currently building on their number sense by saying, writing and making numbers to 10. In the task below they were making numbers to 10 using hands. At this stage students need to count all.

As students progress they begin to further develop more efficient strategies which include;

  • counting on
  • counting on from the larger number

As students progress further it is important they develop their use of more efficient strategies including;

  • doubles
  • near doubles
  • known facts
  • friends of 10
  • bridging to 10
  • partitioning numbers

Here are some games you can play at home to assist with developing their number sense and addition skills;

  • card games (see link for ideas https://www.weareteachers.com/math-card-games/)
  • dominoes
  • tenzi dice game
