Robotics

Written by Gemma Fowler

Although we can’t use our school robots, electronics sets or robotics kits as we learn from home, it’s amazing how much coding we have been able to do just with our devices and internet connections!

Students in Prep to Year Three continue to design and code using the Scratch Jr app on their tablets. Preps have created virtual fish tanks and virtual birthday parties. Years 1- 3 students have made games. Examples of recent projects include one game where a tooth fairy collects teeth and another where a frog crosses a busy highway. It has been a highlight of on-site supervision to see on-site learners proudly showing off their creative work inspired by our WebEx lessons.

In a few short weeks, students in Years 4-6 – many with no previous coding experience – have created their own retro-style video games. To celebrate their hard work, some projects are being showcased in the Saltwater Gamezone on Schoolbox – a virtual video game arcade where our students can play games created by their peers. The quality of projects has been incredibly high across all year levels, and it has been very difficult to choose finalists. In fact, I have increased the number of entries in the final selection to ensure more of these wonderful projects can be shared.

Students from Years 4-6 are asked to play all the games in the final selection and vote for their favourite from each year level by the end of Term Three. Winners will be announced on the virtual arcade Schoolbox page shortly after the end of term.
