Year One News

Dear Year One Families,

Can you believe that Term Three has come to an end? We have managed to solider through this lockdown craziness, and now it is time for a well-earned rest. Our team would like to extend a huge thank you to all students and their families for your participation and support during remote learning in Term Three. We understand how challenging this time has been for everyone, and we would like to acknowledge the resilience and enthusiasm our Year One students have continued to show during this time.

In Inquiry, we have been unpacking and exploring our fourth Central Idea, ‘Natural resources go through processes before they can be used in our communities’ under the Transdisciplinary Theme, ‘How We Organise Ourselves’. We have been supporting the students to make connections between their knowledge and experiences with natural resources and the changes they go through, as they travel from farm to plate. To further support their learning, each child has access to our 'How We Organise Ourselves' class resource page, on Schoolbox, where they can continue to explore throughout this Unit of Inquiry.

Our focus for Reading has been on making connections. We began by encouraging the children to make text-to-self connections; listening to or reading a story and thinking about what it reminded them of in their life. From there, we moved onto text-to-text connections, where we got them to try and make connections with another story, movie or song that contained similar ideas or concepts. And lastly, we focused on text-to-world connections, where the students were able to discuss parts of stories and the things it reminded them of in the real world.

In Mathematics, the students have been further developing their knowledge of Australian coins and money. They have enjoyed exploring the different shapes, values and properties of the coins as well as practising to order and add small collections. Students enjoyed discussing what they do with their money (spenders or savers), where they got their money from (some generous tooth fairies out there!) and some were even able to compare the Australian coins to coins they had collected from other countries.

Our focus on procedural writing has continued, with specific emphasis on being able to write clear and detailed instructions. We all saw the importance of adding detail to our instructions when poor Miss Jennings did not get the sandwich she was hoping for!

As previously discussed, from this point onwards, photos and reflections of what learning your child has completed will be uploaded and shared to your child’s Portfolio on Schoolbox. We recommend families check regularly to track how their child is progressing and encourage parents to leave comments to promote conversations around the concepts your child is learning.

Once again, thank you to everyone for your continued encouragement and support, we hope you enjoy a relaxing break with those closest to you.

On a sad note, the Year One Team wishes Miss V all the best next term as she leaves us for new adventures, but we are happy to welcome Miss Jennings and Miss Sheikh who will be taking care of 1G for the final term of 2021.
