Education in Faith

24th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year B

Peter declares that Jesus is the Christ, and Jesus teaches that those who would follow him must take up his or her cross – Mark 8:27-35

This week’s reading is taken from St. Mark’s Gospel, Jesus begins his journey teaching his disciples that the Son of Man was destined to suffer grievously, to be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and to be put to death, and after three days to rise again; and he said all this quite openly.

Jesus begins his journey to the Cross and Resurrection. The disciples are beginning to understand that Jesus is the Christ, but they cannot reconcile their understanding with Jesus’ own foretelling that he will suffer, be killed, and rise after three days. Peter rebukes his and starts arguing with Jesus. But Jesus makes it clear and rebuked Peter and said to him, ‘Get behind me, Satan! Because the way you think is not God’s way but man’s.’ He called the people and his disciples to him and said, ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me. For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it.’

Then Jesus asked his disciples the question, “Who do people say I am?” they had all sorts of answers. But when he asked them, “Who do you say I am?” They responded, “You are the Christ, the son of the living God.” That was an important answer because Jesus looked like any other man in the neighbourhood. The disciples needed to recognise who Jesus was so they knew to pay attention to all the important things he would teach them. It’s important for us to recognise Jesus so we will listen to what Jesus wants to teach us.

You are the Christ … the Son of Man was destined to suffer much.

No cross, no crown

Jesus reminds us “no cross, no crown.” There can be no Easter without a Good Friday. Everything that happened to Jesus had been foretold by the prophets long before. He came for a purpose, and, as his life unfolded, it became clearer to him what that purpose was.
