Careers
Year 12
No doubt, your Year 12 student is busy preparing for Mid-Course exams. It is also a good time to start considering options for next year.
When researching universities, always remember that each university has its own requirements and that they work independently of each other in relation to admission requirements. ATAR cut offs are more a reflection of the popularity of courses rather than their difficulty. Universities are also experts in marketing their courses with incentive schemes such as early entry, guaranteed entry ( UNSW based on HSC results), scholarships and bonus points.
A good starting point is to explore university websites and see what they have to offer based on your child's ability and future aspirations. Our school will be attending the Careers Expo on Tuesday 28 June where every university, TAFE and a whole host of private providers and government institutions will be represented.
In August and September, each university has an open day to assist future students with decision making. By mid August each student will receive a copy of the Universities Admission Centre's Handbook in which procedures for the 2017 intake of students will be provided in detail.
Students wishing to pursue a career in Medicine, Dentistry and some Health degrees will need to sit an entrance test known as UMAT. Registration for this test closes on 3rd June this year. Macquarie University undertakes an early entry scheme which considers criteria based on achievement in citizenship and other community pursuits.
For students wishing to gain apprenticeships and traineeships in 2017, it is a good idea to have resumes up to date so that applications for any worthwhile opportunities can be exploited with a minimum of fuss when applications open. Details of such opportunities will be communicated through roll call and the Newsletter.
Year 10
Your child is currently completing their resume in class. Students' will have an opportunity to use their resume in an interview early in Term 3 with a teacher when they select their courses for senior school.
Any student wishing to gain an apprenticeship/traineeship/casual job will need this as an important part of their skills set for the workforce. Please encourage your child to fulfil these requirements.
Also, any additional achievements outside the normal curriculum could be instrumental in obtaining early entry to university in the future. School activities such as The Student Representative Council, Peer Support or sporting achievements through school representation can assist students with future career paths.
Please contact me at the school if you wish to discuss any matters in relation to career pathways or employment.

Exploring Early Childhood
Year 12 Exploring Early Childhood have a Party with Childhood Food and Nutrition.
Year 12 Exploring Early Childhood have started off Term 1 learning about food and nutrition in early childhood. Students have been learning about breast and bottle feeding infants as well as the process of weaning. The students gained valuable information from guest speaker, Kara Pollard of the Australian Breastfeeding Association who spoke to the students about the importance of breastfeeding.
For their assessment task, students were presented with a design challenge. The design brief required the students to plan and prepare party food to meet the special dietary requirements of the party guests, which included vegetarianism, peanut allergy, gluten intolerance and Muslim religious belief. Students learnt about the impact of family values and beliefs, and the impact of medical conditions on the food choices for young children.
