BSC FILM FESTIVAL

Emily Doyle

Head of Learning - Media

The Media Learning Area was very proud to present this year’s BSC Film Festival for 2016 on Tuesday 15th November at the Nova Cinema as part of FOMAD.

The evening was a celebration of some of the best Senior Media work produced in Years 10, 11 and 12. In Media, production work usually focuses on a theme or genre – for example, ‘film mysteries’ or ‘documentary’ in Year 11 – and students are free to interpret this as they wish. As the audience found out, Senior Media students in 2016 interpreted the topics in a variety of ways and came up with some outstanding final results.

There were 22 films in the program and they showcased an increased sophistication in storytelling ability, technical skill and most importantly were hugely engaging for the audience. For the second year running it was also the premiere of the Media Co-Curricula Program’s short film production Game of Homes. This film was the product of a year-long, student-led project created by and for the students. It was amazing to see student work on the big screen and to be able to share it with a broader audience outside of the classroom context.

Can’t wait to see what next year’s students come up with!

Junior Media Showcase

Media faculty and students also invited the community to enjoy the Junior Media Showcase - an event held during school hours.  This provided the opportunity to exhibit some of the best Media work by students in Years 8 and 9 on abig screen in the Auditorium.

There were thrillers, music videos and epic battles - and the Media CoCurricula Program’s whole-school film ‘Game of Homes’ also featured and was a real crowd pleaser!

James Heywood

Year 11

The BSC Film Festival was an amazing experience. Because of it, I was able to show off the work that I and many others had created - speding countless hours of planning, filming and refining to make these short film ideas a reality. I loved being able to sit with my peers and laugh along at all the films I helped create, as well as see some real talent in the Year 12 VCE films - giving me inspiration for next year. The whole experience was enjoyable and entertaining, and definitely showcased the massive potential and creative skill of the senior media students. I will definitely be attending next year!

Emma Galante Le Cornu

Year 7

It was  exciting to be in an actual theatre and seeing our older role models’ films on the big screen! Making the CCP film was great. Just being in an atmosphere surrounded by other film makers was thrilling.

Madeleine Horner

Year 7

I thought the films were well edited and presented. And it looked like everyone  had a lot of fun making them! Seeing the festival made me interested in Media as someone who hasn’t done the subject before. I acted in the CPP film Game of Homes and I thought it was a great experience to see how a film set functions. It was well made and we did a good job.

Grace McCulloch

Year 7 Coordinator

I was so impressed with the technical skills and improved storytelling ability of the current VCE cohort. I saw some Junior Media students at the festival and it’s great for them to see what they can work towards. I actually used one of the Year 11 documentaries about the canteen in Year 7 COGS as I thought the message about respect was brilliant and the film was really well-executed.

Leif Lawrie

Year 11

It was really surreal seeing my film "Pigs to the Slaughter" on the big screen at the Nova. We put in lots of hard work and it was exciting to show it off in such a professional way. I can't wait to see the selection of films chosen next year!

Warren Evert

Senior School Leader

Walking into Cinema Nova it was amazing to see the whole foyer filled with excited BSC students, teachers, family and friends; there was a real buzz. The films were Hollywood quality and the mix of genres really kept the audience entertained the whole time. It was a fantastic experienceand I can’t wait for next year!

Joe Winkler

Year 11

Over the course of production we really dug deep and put in 110%. We all showed up on the day and full credit to the audience for giving such a great reaction. The crew are just looking forward to bigger and better things for the 2017 festival.

Nicholas Harrap Year 11

I was very surprised to see and hear the reactions from the audience, especially for the film Sherlock Holmes  and the Blood Lily; that shocked me the most!

Simone Vukotic Year 9 Coordinator

It was really good to see how advanced the practical skills of the senior Media students are. I laughed so hard I cried. I particularly enjoyed the documentaries and the multifaceted talents of Adam Abdullatif!

Jessie Marshall Year 11

The film festival was a really great and interesting experience. It was especially wonderful to see the kinds of films people in Year 11 and 12 had made this year. I have studied Year 11 Media via Distance Education this year, so I had the opportunity to see the kinds of things I can hope to do next year. The films were diverse in ideas and techniques which made it all the more interesting, and it was cool to see people from school on a big cinema screen!

Bree Morrison Teacher - VCD

It was a fantastic night - I really enjoyed seeing all of the creative stories on the big screen. It was fun to see some of my Visual Communication and Design students in a different context - as actors  in some of the films.
