This month welcomed the much anticipated return of the BSC Art & Design Exhibition.  This event is a riot of colour and craftsmanship - and part of the annual Festival of Media and Design here at BSC.

Once again,  work by students across all year levels was exhibited - to the delight of the crowd of visitors that swarmed every available display space.  Never failing to surprise and impress, the offerings from the Art, Design & Technology Learning Area clearly illustrate that so many of our students truly flourish in this arena of study.

The innovative nature, quality and diversity of the artwork and design pieces was amazing - it just gets better every year!

The Art and Design Exhibition 2016 opened on Thursday 17th November, bringing together creative work by students from every year level and a wide variety of disciplines. From painting, drawing, photography and sculpture, to visual communication displays and design products in wood and textiles, the show was a visual feast that celebrated the abundance of creativity and skill that we have at BSC. Art and Design staff worked tirelessly with students to arrange, prepare and curate the exhibition.

The opening night of the show was enlivened by piano and keyboard students playing a range of tunes, as well as an endurance performance drawing by Studio Art student Jeremy Maffescioni (Year 11). This year, the exhibition was part of a larger week of creative events – BSC’s first ever Festival of Media, Art and Design (FOMAD). The festival included PLAY16, a celebration of new video games by students, a variety of Media screenings and the Art and Design Exhibition.

At the opening, 2016 Art Captain Tayler Muir announced some awards for Year 10 photography students. Kiana Carta Davis and Lauren Jelovcan both walked away with $25 vouchers for photography supplies donated by Vanbar Imaging, and Damian Christakis was awarded first prize for his contemplative portrait of colleague Alec Miller – Damian received a $50 voucher from Vanbar to further his photographic pursuits. Congratulations!

After the exhibition closed, the People’s Choice award was tallied. After over two hundred votes, we are proud to announce the winner of the 2016 Art & Design People's Choice Award is

The scale and striking quality of this work made a huge impact on its audience - congratulations, Holly!

Holly took home the People’s Choice trophy (sculpted by 2016 Art Captain ,Tayler Muir) as well as $130 of art supplies donated by Zart Art. Holly’s giant, intricate mixed media sculpture “Anger” was a hit with viewers.

Year 11

The exhibition displayed an abundance of incredible artworks again this year.  Pieces varied from small detailed sketches to wild photographs and sculptures. It was such a great experience to see so much talent from across all year levels.  Students have spent the whole year working on some of these pieces - it was great to see them being appreciated by an enthusiastic audience.

My artwork, titled Anger, was created from my exploration process of investigating how emotions would look if they had a physical visual aesthetic, specifically through creatures. Anger explores aggressive and angry emotions which I trialled through colours, textures, shapes and different proportions.

My artwork used a variety of materials, but the base was constructed from a simple wire frame and newspaper, then plaster casted to create a smoother surface. I then used a lot of hot glue to construct the surface of the dragon’s head, including small rocks and gems. The glass pieces were made from broken glass and embellished with glitter to show anger through  texture, shape and sparkle. The wings and neck of the dragon were simply made from paper and card, each feather and scale being cut and glued, and painted to show the fire-like colour of anger.

Assembling the work took a lot of problem solving and long nights at school - but in the end it all came together.

The BSC Art & Technolgy Exhibition brought together a year of work from all the different year levels in so many different mediums. The show celebrates the massive amount of time and effort that went into creating these masterpieces, and I think everyone - students and teachers - should be congratulated with the amount of work they put into the art show.

I also take the opportunity to thank all the students, staff, parents and friends for coming to see our work!

The 2016 Art and Design Exhibition featured a variety of wonderful Textile pieces and products.

The VCE folios and products showed real dedication, attention to detail and expertise. Everyone showed their Textiles skills by designing and making some amazing and colourful designs.

The art show was a great way to see people express themselves and see other people’s interpretation of what art can be. I particularly enjoyed Holly Payne’s monumental dragon sculpture Anger.

The Art Exhibition was really good and displayed this school’s amazing artistic abilities. I really enjoyed Sarah Abou-Eid’s heart sculptures because it did really well to portray how anxiety affects your actions and how you think. The woodwork section was great too because it showed how practical objects can have such artistic value too.

The exhibition was a sensational time. There were some really intricate works that you could really get into – Izabell Myrwoda’s cat collages, Bronwyn Cashin’s awesome screen-printed and hand drawn artworks and Enya Weber’s ink drawings were some of my favourites. I really appreciated Jessie Marshall’s amazing cloak and watercolour drawings portraying same sex couples across the ages.
