Visual Arts and                Performing Arts:

Choir at NPS

After the re-introduction of choir last year, we are starting a new program this year, with the first rehearsal the week after camp.

Choir will be open to all students in years 3 to 6, and rehearsals will take place in the Music room.

We already have two important events lined up: the first is School of Rock at the end of term 2, and the second is the inaugural Darebin Choral Festival in August. This is the first ever choral festival in the northern suburbs, and it promises to be impressive. As the conductor of Preston community choir ARCappella since 2008, I am excited to be directly involved in helping to organise this historic event. Please come and speak to me if you would like to know more!

Application notes for the choir will be given out to years 3/4 next week and to 5/6 students in the week after camp. We hope to see many of you at the first rehearsal on Wednesday 4th March at lunchtime.

What's been happening in Music?

F/1 students have started learning the Bumblebee song - "Bee, bee, bumblebee, can you sing your name to me?" This is a beautiful, gentle song that encourages children to sing by themselves - an important step in any child's musical development. The children are also enjoying the humorous games we are devising to follow prompts like "staying in the space" and the "sit down music".

2/3 students will be doing a number of movement, singing and instrumental tasks over the course of this term, using the songs "Play Your Drum" and "Queen Caroline". This week they used the hand-held percussion to create a rhythm, while at the same time learning to distinguish between instruments that make different sounds like "clacking" or "jingling", for example. I am looking forward to incorporating recorder into these activities - more on this to come!

4/5/6 classes have been working with the classic 80s theme song to "Beverley Hills Cop", Axel F. They learned the "basic" version of the melody on marimba, and over the course of this term they will incorporate recorder, keyboard, guitar, bass, drums and other instruments. Speaking of the 80s, they are also learning to sing the classic Crowded House tune Weather With You.

Recorder - They are now on order so stay tuned! More information coming soon!

It is all systems go in the Art Room!

F/1 students have really enjoyed creating self-portraits. We explored lots and lots of different lines and practised drawing them all. We then turned these lines into beautiful portraits of ourselves. William and Ashleigh were so proud of their work!

2/3 students continue their exploration of mark making with oil pastels. This week, we used a colour wash to create a background for our flying creatures (birds, dragons, Pokémon, dinosaurs etc). Next week we will bring all our skills together to create flying creatures with a blue or turquoise background.

4/5/6s have been really unpacking the Elements of Art. Last week, in groups, they were given an element and a large sheet of card. They then have to make a poster explaining what the element is and why it’s important to an artist. We worked with Success Criteria to keep us on track. I can’t wait to see how they turn out! Look out for them displayed around C block in the coming weeks!

Have a wonderful fortnight,

Belinda
