State Final of Indonesian Speaking Competition

On Saturday June 2nd  an intrepid  group of 20 students of Indonesian language and two teachers and one brave parent set out before dark to get to Melbourne University to participate in the Victorian  Indonesian students language competition. These students were from Year 7-11.

This day is a great challenge to our students to go beyond their comfort zone and hold a conversation with Indonesian native speakers on prepared topics. Speaking in language is an important serious skill. Developing this skill holds them in good stead for higher level assessment; particularly VCE. Our students travelled for eight hours by bus to and from Melbourne and all participated commendably in the spoken interviews.

We also had a brief stop off at Neylayan Indonesian restaurant in Swanston street before the trip home.

To say our teachers were proud of their participation and performance would be an understatement. The students truly represented our College in a noble and  engaged manner. On the day all were winners in our eyes.

The following students achieved outstanding results:

Rithika Josy – highly commended in year 11

Hudson Harris – 3rd place in year 7 beginning

Ayya Maulyda – 3rd place in year 7 continuing

A huge thanks to Bu Burchell for coordinating the event and also Pak Matthews for taking the studetns to Melbourne with Bu Burchell.

2018 Betty Amsden Youth Scholarship Course

Year 10 student Sophie O’Brien was a successful nominee in this year’s Betty Amsden Youth Scholarship. Sophie attended five full days of workshops at the Melbourne Theatre Company headquarters. I had the pleasure to watch the final group performance on Friday July 6th.  The students were in years 9 and 10 and came from diverse backgrounds. I witnessed a wonderful celebration of learning and new friendships being formed through their shared experience over the week.  Congratulations Sophie!
