Level 3 (Grade 1)

Reading Journals

Recent data gathered by teachers suggests many students are not reading at home nor filling in their logbooks. We suggest reading with your child at least 4 times a week and filling in their logbook, every time that you hear them read. Please ensure your child brings their reader and logbook to school every day to change. We greatly appreciate your support with this.

At school, we are teaching your child to take care of the books in the library when borrowing and reading. When reading at home please model to your child how to turn the pages carefully, being gentle when holding the book and how to place the book in the shelf safely. This will instil positive behaviours in the library and ensure that our books remain in good condition for enjoyment.

Important Dates

Monday 20th May - SMPS Open day

Tuesday 28th May - Scienceworks Excursion

Please note that children are not permitted to attend Incursions and Excursions if the excursion levy has not been paid. Please approach the school office for further information.

Spotlight on Reading Eggs

Reading Eggs is an online reading program that helps children develop their reading skills. The app gives students access to reading lessons, phonics games and books, building students phonological, fluency and comprehension skills. When first logging on students partook in a placement test, which assessed their reading skills and placed them at a reading lesson appropriate for their reading level. We encourage students to play Reading Eggs at home, but ask families to monitor their child’s screen time and not allow more than 15-20 minutes of screen time each night. If your child is experiencing difficulty logging on at home, please talk to your child’s homeroom teacher for assistance.

Sustainability Unit

During this term, your child will be learning about Sustainability and ways we can look after our environment. One of the things students are learning about is how to reuse things that are commonly discarded. In a few weeks, students will be constructing items and we would appreciate if you could start sending old items to school so they can go into a collection that students will share.

Some of the things we would like you to send include:

  • Egg cartons
  • Cardboard
  • Plastic containers
  • Paper towel rolls
  • Old buttons
  • Used ribbons
  • Used wrapping paper
  • Material scraps
