Waste
During the week we had the pleasure to present to the Prep and Grade 1 students and they have raised to the challenge beautifully. They knew to point to the signs on the bins and help figure out where things go. We had some great questions and lots of waves and smiley faces. We hope they shared the enthusiasm at home with their families.
At lunchtime we monitored the Landfill bin and after correct sorting there was very little landfill rubbish. This shows us that it is possible to reduce our Landfill waste by up to 90% by throwing our waste items in the correct bins.
It is worrying to see a lot of packaged food. In fact, most of the waste is soft plastic packaging; zip lock bags, biscuit wrappers, glad wrap and crisp/wafer wrappers. We would like to encourage every family to reduce packaged food in lunches, not just for the sake of our planet, but for the benefit of the children’s health as well.
On Monday morning at the lunchbox talk we learned from the dietician that prepackaged snacks have in most cases double the amount of sugar or salt or saturated fats than a less packaged alternative.
Worm Farm
We are delighted to report that the worm farm is working great and the worms seem to be happily enjoying the feast we are feeding them. They are growing their family and that means they can process our organic waste faster. We have installed a second worm farm in the same garden on Level 1 to balance the processing. On Monday’s Open Day please come and visit us in the garden and we will happily show you around.
