Squid Games on Netflix

There are often particular media items which wellbeing experts express concern about. Squid games (available on netflix) is a current example of this. The podcast Happy Families ‘podcast #372 Is the Squid for Your Kid?’ by Justin and Kylie Coulson (start at 4 minute mark) gives parents an insight into this series. The podcast is available here: https://www.happyfamilies.com.au/podcasts/ Squid games is the number one series on Netflix both in Australia and in many other countries. In this podcast, Justin and Kylie provide you with some really good insight into this series and why they are concerned about it. They also refer to roadblox (an online gaming platform) where there are over 300 games where the squid game content is simulated.

A number of our students are talking about this and engaging in it. Whilst it is popular for its entertainment value, we should be aware that some of our experts are very concerned about the impact of the content on the wellbeing of young people. Justin speaks about Leonie Smith who is a cyber safety expert who warns parents about the squid games gaming on the roadblox platform. Here is a link to Leonie’s post relating to this: https://www.facebook.com/page/131386803638881/search/?q=squid%20games

Parental controls on our TVs and internet services and on Netflix are an important way of ensuring that your children’s viewing is regulated. Whilst you may not wish to ban this material, it is always good to have conversations about this content with your children. Justin and Kylie lead you through how you can have these empowering conversations with them. It is always difficult to monitor everything that our children do and see, but it is important to be aware as best we can to ensure our young people are safe.
