Magis report 

The Magis Awards Breakfast held on the last Thursday of Term 3 was a wonderful success, with over 160 people in attendance, and nearly 300 awards presented. Warmest thanks to Mr Rob Henderson and Mrs Jess Bouwman who presented the awards, and Ms Daisy Farley, Ms Kirralee Dawson, Mr Damien Connellan, Mr Simon Carrello and Mr Stuart Massey who all announced sections of the awards. Special thanks also to the following Year 12 Magis committee members who assisted with the presentation of awards: Grace Barbour, Eve Cullity,  Caitlin Green, Bella Pether, Skye MacMillan who also gave the Magis captain’s report, and McKenzie Richardson.

 

Congratulations to the following students who won Magis Champion Scholar Awards, which are  based on a points system that includes school academic performance, and performances in interschool, John XXIII and House academic competitions in 2021:

Major awards presented were for major interschool events including Mock Trials, Creative Edge Challenge, Da Vinci Cecathlon, Tournament of Minds, WADL, International and British Parliamentary Debating competitions and John XXIII  Public Speaking, Chess and Creative Writing competitions, and the House Academic Challenge series.  Full results are in the Magis  student resources, and more awards will be published in next week’s newsletter.  The link with the Magis Awards Breakfast powerpoint featuring 2021 highlights for the program, plus the Public Speaking video are attached below.

 

This term sees four major interschool  gifted student events including International Debating in which three teams began in round one on Friday this week, the Royal Commonwealth Public Speaking Competition at the Constitution Centre on 29 October in which we have three speakers, Evie Rigg, Meg Derbyshire and Asha Paton, the Ethics Olympiad with two teams (the maximum allowed) on Tuesday 9 November, and Quest at UWA in November.

 

Two new Magis House events are being trialed this term, the Ministry Challenge which includes Ministry, religion and school history questions, and the John XXIII Scrabble competitions. These competitions begin in weeks 3 and 4 respectively, and will count for 2022 Academic House points.

 

The Magis Chronicle a 48 pare hard cover book containing reports from all Magis events for 2021 plus over 100 colour photos, will be available in about three weeks for order, or free in PDF form.
