Grade Five

What a terrific start to Term 4 we have had, buoyed by the news that we will all soon be back with our students and our students with their teachers and friends; we can’t wait!
Our Integlish [Integrated+English] work has been based on the machines created by Rube Goldberg, which are machines that use a set of reactions that work in succession, triggering one event after another until the final event is triggered. An example of this is the popular board game, Mousetrap, which contains elaborate mechanisms with a variety of moving parts to perform a simple function, plus it’s a lot of fun too! Our students have followed the Design Process to create their own Rube Goldberg-inspired machine; planning, creating, testing, improving and finally, sharing their creation. It has been a high interest activity for all, with some incredibly clever machines created.
In Maths this term we have focused our students’ learning on Measurement, particularly reviewing perimeter, area and volume, while introducing and working with capacity and mass. Our upcoming unit on Financial Maths will involve our students working through activities related to the Royal Oatlands Show, bringing together financial Maths including budgeting, as well as location and mapping, and units of measurement. Our students continue to develop and enhance their problem solving skills while working on open-ended and specific problem solving questions.
We continue to be incredibly thankful for the important skills our students continue to learn and develop during their remote learning Specialist activities; the effort our amazing Specialist Team put in to each and every activity will serve our students well upon their return to school.
As a Team, we are looking forward to what lies ahead for the remainder of Term 4 and seeing our students grow into the wonderful Senior School Leaders that we know they will be.
