Dear Parents and Carers,

Year 3 and 4 re-enact the Last Supper
Year 3 and 4 re-enact the Last Supper

This week, St Joseph’s students have been re-enacting the Holy Week events of Jesus’ passion and death during the morning assembly. Holy Week actually begins this Sunday, known as Palm Sunday, when our Church remembers Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and the events leading up to his death.

Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey to the cheers of his followers waving palms. However, before entering the walled city, Jesus stood outside and gazed at the city knowing full well the absolute danger he was in.

The events that led up to Jesus’ death would have caused him great fear and dread as he sat down to the last supper with his disciples, prayed in agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, was arrested and sentenced to death, whipped and made to carry the cross for his own crucifixion.

Jesus took those incredibly brave steps toward Jerusalem because he was totally committed to his mission of making God’s love known to all, especially the poor and outcasts. As a Catholic school, we strive to continue that mission, with you as parents, so that our students grow in faith knowing how loved they are by God.

Like Jesus, at St Joseph's we all aim to welcome each other with a sense of hospitality, care, compassion, and a willingness to be forgiving so that all may have life and have it to the full (John 10:10). Together, we desire for the children to learn within a Catholic worldview so that they too may carry the very mission of Jesus- in their words and actions, into the classrooms, the playground, families, and beyond.

During Holy Week, I am very conscious of those in our school community who are in the midst of their own suffering, fear and dread. We have families and members of our school community experiencing serious ill health, financial difficulty, or are emotionally unwell to name a few.  Thank you to those in our precious school community who have reached out to these families.

Fr Anthony Jukes OFM wrote about Jesus' last supper,

“When Jesus said, ‘Do this in remembrance of me,’ he is saying to us that whenever you celebrate the Mass, whenever you remember me, I will be there with you, fulfilling the promise to be with us to the end of time.

We pray that those suffering in our community will know the presence of Jesus with them.

A Catholic Education begins with the family so I encourage all families to take time this Holy Week and Easter to join the parish community in remembrance of Jesus. The times of liturgies and Masses are below for your convenience.
