Opportunities for families to host international students in 2022

Alan Clarke, International Student Coordinator

Expressions of interest are sought from families who might consider hosting students from China and Japan in 2022 and beyond.

Specifically, a student from Huzhou, Zhejiang, China. She is currently living in Brighton, but will start in June in Year 9 and continue her studies here until 2025. The initial commitment to host would be for 2022 only, with the option to continue for future years.

Hosting involves welcoming a student into your home and caring for them as 'one of your own', by providing them with all meals and helping them to adjust to daily life in Australia.

Hosting a student from another country can help your own children gain a fresh perspective on the aspects of their life they may take for granted, while also learning about another culture.

Please email clarkea@kilvington.vic.edu.au if you are interested in learning more about the responsibilities and benefits of hosting Kilvington international students.

*Host families need to apply for a Volunteer Working With Children Check (free) for all household members who are over the age of 18, and read and abide by Kilvington’s Child Safe policies.

An international student’s family currently pay a host family $350 a week to cover food, electricity and other expenses incurred by the host family. Hosting one or two international students is considered volunteer work by the Australian Taxation Office so this income is tax-free.

Winter School Uniform

Our uniform supplier, Bob Stewart, has advised that there may be some delay in getting some winter uniforms items (tunics, pants and skirts) in stock prior to the 1 May switch from the summer to winter uniform.

As a result, we are relaxing this requirement until mid-May, to give families who are impacted an opportunity to purchase their compulsory winter uniform items.

Bob Stewart can be contacted on: 9036 7384, 466 Centre Road, Bentleigh and www.bobstewart.com.au.

Special report: Vaping and E-Cigarettes

Vaping is becoming a trendy pastime that is growing in popularity across Australia, especially amongst teenagers. It is the act of inhaling a vapour created by an electronic cigarette, or e-cigarette.

Most teenagers are unaware of the associated risks and potential impact vaping can have on their development and overall health. Parents are encouraged to discuss the dangers of nicotine addiction and include e-cigarettes in the discussion alongside alcohol and drugs.

This Special Report highlights the facts around vaping and e-cigarettes and what are the potential risks.  If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the School for further information or seek medical or professional help.
