Jazz Cabaret Evening

Lin Yatsuzuka and Kayla Brazitikos, Year 12

On Friday 1 April, the Performing Arts department held the Jazz and Contemporary Cabaret at the Glen Eira Town Hall for the first time in two years.

Many parents, friends and staff were well entertained by our talented and enthusiastic musicians from Years 9 to 12.

It was exciting to see eager students performing for parents and staff members, despite some students being unable to attend due to COVID. We would like to thank all of the students who were present and gave their all while performing.

A special thanks to everyone who helped make the evening a success: Music Co-Captains, Caleb Wong and Lin Yatsuzuka; Production Captain, Renae Bekas; and Dance Co-Captains, Kaitlyn Connoly and Sara Dorn, who all worked throughout the term to assist Ms Bull in organising and running the evening.

Finally, thank you to all the staff and the backstage crew who put together the performances behind the scenes, as well as photographers Kayla Brazitikos and Jasmine Parry for capturing beautiful photos of the performances on the night.

Year 12 Theatre Studies Unit 3 Production - Boy Girl Wall

Samantha Kosky, Drama Teacher

A boy. A girl. A crack in the wall …

Last week, in an intimately created space on stage in Dalton Hall, Year 12 Theatre Studies students asked their audience to stargaze, while as actors they popped their tongues in their cheeks and took a good, long look at The Big Bang Theory

Elena, Millie, Ali and Angus were democratic, spontaneous and Pythonesque, even post-modern, in shaping the theatrical and comedic discovery open to them in the interpreting of the play Boy Girl Wall

Together, in just four weeks, they toyed with resetting what playwright Matthew Ryan sees as 'the understanding of what narration and exposition are'.

The challenge of Boy Girl Wall was in the adaptation of a one-hander for four actors. They asked many questions including: what does it mean to write a book, to love 1970s disco, to miss the bus, or to search for a supernova?

Co-Director Elena Stuckey de la Banda says, "there are many things to learn in Theatre Studies, but arguably the most integral skill is collaboration. Collaboration is tough, exhausting and takes a lot of compromise and persistence. Above all, collaboration is beautiful.”

She also adds, “The journey of creating and performing this play has been one of many learning experiences, challenges and late night problem-solving. Yet, as we come to the end of this unit, I couldn't have asked for a better experience or team to have around me … we wanted to show you what four weeks of dedication, determination and collaboration could create.”

Piano duo Gina Gataveckaite and Tristan Lee

Our piano teacher, Gina Gataveckaite, would like to warmly invite everyone to her next recital at Tempo Rubato this Saturday, 9 April at 8.00pm.

Gina and Tristan will perform music from two of Tchaikovsky’s most loved ballets, alongside Ravel’s magical Mother Goose Suite

Commencing with an arrangement of Swan Lake for four hands, followed by Ravel’s exquisite piano duet, the concert will conclude with Rachmaninoff’s virtuoso arrangement of music from Sleeping Beauty.

This piano duo really enjoys performing this music together, and the choreography of four hands jumping around one keyboard really seems to bring these balletic scores to life.

Program:

  • Tchaikovsky – Swan Lake Suite
  • Ravel – Mother Goose Suite
  • Tchaikovsky/Rachmaninoff – Sleeping Beauty Suite

Date and time: Saturday 9 April, 8.00pm

Address: 34 Breese St, Brunswick 3056
