School Highlights

Year 12 Easter Egg Drive

Today, the Year 12s had an Easter Egg drive for the Lighthouse Foundation (their charity partner for this year). They donated bags of eggs, boxes of eggs and individual eggs. There was even a bunny.

The eggs will be donated to the Lighthouse Foundation to distribute to their houses that support young people facing homelessness. The Year 12 students also wore colourful socks to celebrate the end of Term 1.

Year 8 Robotics unit

Celestine Yeung, Digital Technologies Teacher

In Digital Technologies this term, Year 8 students completed a Robotics unit where they were asked to design and create a robot that could provide a solution to one of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Students worked in small groups to conduct research and brainstorm digital solutions using the LEGO EV3 Mindstorms.

An incredible variety of innovative solutions were produced, showcasing the students’ creativity, problem solving and programming skills.

You can check out some of these outstanding prototypes in the School’s main reception display cabinets.

Global Just Dance 2022 competition

Celestine Yeung, Digital Technologies Teacher

This term, members of the Years 7 and 8 E-sports Club participated in a Global Just Dance 2022 competition, organised by The Fuse Cup

We achieved an amazing result, coming third in the Australian Grand Final.

Two of our students, Liam and Skye, have recapped their experiences below.

Skye Nguyen, Year 7

I joined the E-sports Club because I thought it would be a great experience to get to know new people.

I was filled with excitement and adrenaline when our team got into the Grand Final. Earlier in the competition, we didn't achieve a great score, but I think this helped me to become more resilient. It was also great to encourage and cheer on the people who were playing.

Overall, I loved dancing to the songs, even when it wasn’t the songs I’d expected. E-sports is a great club to be in, and I highly recommend attending!

Liam Fernandes, Year 8

When I joined the E-sports Club, I was looking for a community of people who could relate to the games I liked to play, as well as growing the selection of games that I played.

On the day of the competition, everyone was nervous but excited. Our earlier scores made this evident, but we pushed through and got better and better.

I saw amazing teamwork; everyone was cheering each other on, and no one had a bad attitude. In the competition itself, we did a lot better than any of us had expected, placing third in Australia!

Overall, the day was an amazing experience. I would gladly join in again, and I encourage others who enjoy games and want to make new friends to join our E-sports Club.

Cut for a Cause with Harmony Day in the Senior School

Jacqui Goldenberg, Community Service Program Director

CUT FOR A CAUSE

On 29 March, 24 students cut their mullets and long locks off for Cut for a Cause. They have now managed to raise $15,000 for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC)! What an achievement!

A big thank you to Cath and Carrie from 187 the barber room in McKinnon for donating their time and expertise to us. Hair longer than 20cm will be donated to sustainable salons.

We would also like to thank Tadhg, a volunteer with the ASRC, who joined us on the day and took back a car loaded with donated goods for the ASRC Food Bank.

Finally, thank you to our brave students, and great to see staff enthusiastically getting involved.

BATTLE OF THE BANDS

We were lucky enough to have four bands perform for our Battle of the Bands, including Rocco Cavalini, which wasmade up of some of our Maths teachers (who luckily, all have a day job!).

We ran a 'vote with small change' competition for your favourite band and the resounding winners were Fisheye

Money raised from voting and the sale of orange cookies (over $300) will be donated to the Schools Plus Flood Recovery Appeal.

It was a great day overall, showcasing that the Kilvington community really is one that lives out our motto 'Not for our own, but others’ good.'

ASRC celebrates 20 years of hope

Jacqui Goldenberg, Community Service Program Director

A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of attending the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre’s (ASRC) 20th anniversary celebration - a wonderful night full of love, encouragement and accomplishment.

It was an incredible opportunity to learn more about their cause and efforts over the past 20 years in fighting for refugee rights and helping migrants in Australia. The ASRC is now the largest human rights organisation in Australia providing support for people seeking asylum.

During the event, we were introduced to people in the ASRC's internship programs and to the various teams that make up the ASRC. We heard their stories and their reasons for fighting for refugee rights, as well as the ASRC’s plans for the future.

Overall, it was an inspiring event which has spurred ideas and action in our community service team, as we aim to support the ASRC and others with our endeavours.

VCE Season of Excellence – Top Designs

Kirsty Watts, Academic Dean of Technology and eLearning

Recently, Rosie Busuttil (Academic Dean of Visual Arts) and I attended the VCE Season of Excellence Top Designs opening where we saw 2021 Year 12 student, Kyle Patocs, and his family.

Kyle entered his Year 12 Media film and was accepted into this exhibition at the Melbourne Museum.

He was very excited about this achievement. Here is a link to his video which features past PFA President, Kirsten Brooks.

Embellished excursion to Top Screen

Henry McArthur, Year 11

On Thursday 7 April, both the Years 11 and 12 VCE Media classes took part in an excursion to the Capitol Theatre on Swanston street.

As we waited for the films to begin, the pre-eminent modern architecture that embellished the room diverged our restlessness.

We enjoyed the obscure nature of the diverse films which ranged from sinister thrillers to community documentaries to unsettling plotless animations.
