Junior School News

Another term has almost finished, and we have had many student successes over Term 1 that everyone should be very proud of.

Term 2 is always a very busy term, and we have several events coming up including NAPLAN (Years 7 and 9), Year 8 Medieval Day, Open Night and the Year 8 History Competition just to name a few.

One of our main events is our Year 7 Share Our Success afternoon held in the library, where the Year 7s write a letter to their grade 6 teachers to invite them to Glen Eira College and share their experiences thus far this year.

Early in the term we are hosting two parent information nights, for Years 8 and 9. These will be held online so that you are in the comfort of your own home. The details are as follows:

Year 8 - Meet and Greet

Wednesday 27th April 5:30pm - Week 1, Term 2

Year 9 - Meet and Greet

Thursday 5th May 5:30pm - Week 2, Term 2

It is a great opportunity to meet our coordinators and Head of School, with the chance to ask questions as well. Please keep an eye on Xuno for more information and a link to join in on the meet.

Year 7 News

Term One Done & Dusted

After an exceptionally long term, the Year 7s have made it through their first term of secondary school. Between Year 7 Camp, the Swimming Carnival, Junior School Sports, Photo Day and adapting to secondary schooling, the Year 7s have had little time to be bored.

As Year 7 coordinators, we have been immensely proud of the way in which the Year 7 students have embraced secondary school. The Year 7s have adapted well to the challenges of managing their lockers, being organised for class, finding their way around the school and requesting assistance when required.

Thank you to all the Year 7s who have contributed to this positive start and we encourage all students to maintain kindness to others, respectful relationships and making learning their focus in every class.

Well done Year 7s! We look forward to term two. Have a good rest. You all deserve it!

Year 8 News

With Term 1 coming to a close, we would like to pass on our congratulations to all Year 8 students for their ongoing efforts as they re-adjust to normal school life. Our young people are visibly committed to their learning and this shows through the positive feedback we receive from teachers.

Parent Teacher Interviews have provided us with the opportunity to celebrate successes and to help our young people improve their confidence for learning.

Throughout our assemblies, we have also had the opportunity to address bullying and how this can negatively impact student wellbeing.

We have been encouraging students to report any inappropriate behaviours so that we can focus on providing support for those involved. In particular, we would like our young people to feel empowered to call out poor choices and contribute to the positive learning environment of GEC.

We would like to wish you all a relaxing Term 1 break and looking forward to greeting you all back shortly.

Year 9 News

We have certainly had a busy start to Term 1. It was great to meet many Year 9 parents at parent teacher interviews on 29th March. In the last week of term 1, Accelerus reports will be available for parents to see the achievements of their child in each subject for the Common Assessment Tasks - CAT 1 done this term. Please do not hesitate to contact year level coordinators or subject teachers if there are any questions or concerns. We want Year 9 students to reflect on these reports and set some goals for the rest of the year.

We are very proud to see that many Year 9s are seeking opportunities to seize learning opportunities offered at school in class and in the many lunchtime and after school clubs. It is great to see that students are working towards this year’s motto of Learn, Grow and Connect in different ways. We have Chess club, Anime club, enterprising club and many more clubs running successfully at school for students to go beyond their classroom and explore. This information is available on GEC Hub and in the daily student bulletin.

In week 8, Year 9 students have done their Morrisby Interviews and have now received their professional booklet that shows their areas of strengths to guide them what their future goals or careers may be. In week 10, all Year 9 students participated in the Australian Geography competition for Humanities. Also, our 9C group and a few students from 9A & 9B attended the French Film Festival in week 9.

In PE some Year 9 students celebrated International women's Day by making posters of the most Influencing Women in their life as a class project. It was great to see that students did not only pick famous women personalities in the world, but acknowledged their mothers, sisters, aunties or teachers for this project, who have influenced them in a powerful way and shaped their thinking or aim in life. Well done Year 9s.

In Term 2, there will be some changes to the student timetable. We advise students to check their timetable for next term. Some students are not checking their timetable and often come in PE uniform when they do not have PE, so please encourage your child to check their timetable the night before and get their school uniform and resources organised for the next day. Parents and students can check the updated timetable on Xuno.

We often use our Year 9 google classroom to communicate with all Year 9 students. It is mainly used by Year level coordinators for year level assemblies dates and venues as well as by different subject teachers for excursions, incursions, festivals, and competitions etc. Wellbeing and the IT department also communicate with Year 9s via this platform. We strongly advise all Year 9s to check and read carefully all updates posted on the Year 9 Google classroom.

Lastly, we want to wish our students a happy and safe term 1 school break.

Congratulations

Genevieve 9E and Audrey 7E competed at the 2022 Melbourne International Judo Open on Saturday 12th March. There were many interstate competitors. The girls competed in different weight divisions, Genevieve won bronze, Audrey won gold. Congratulations girls!

Congratulations also to Laura Wong who competed at the  Australian National Track and Field Championship in Sydney. Laura won the U14 80m hurdles by running amazingly in 12.30s in the Final Australian Champion.

She also got:

- the silver medal with the Victorian team in U14 4x 100m.

- 7th place in U15 200m hurdles (she ran with athletes one year older as U14 do not run 200m hurdles)

- 10th place in U14 100m

She trained hard off season during lock down and during the full season and she is happy that all this work has paid off. Congratulations Laura!
