Executive Director's Welcome

Alumni Boarding at 364 Church Street

As I write, our Year 7 and alumni students are travelling home – by jet, charter flight, train, minibus and car – to their homes in the NT and Victoria for a very well-earned break with family on Country.  It’s remarkable to reflect on the fact that this term has been the first full term of school in Victoria since 2019!  How good it is to be back to normal!

On their last morning in the classroom I head the pleasure of hearing the Year 7s reading during their daily “Drop Everything and Read” session.  I was blown away by their growth in just 10 weeks – it is exciting to imagine how far they will have come by the end of this year.  Similarly, I have loved hearing all about Term 1 from our alumni, particularly our newest alumni as they’ve settled into their Partner Schools.

Last week we marked the completion of construction works at our next Alumni Boarding House at 364 Church Street.  We shared a very special completion dinner with the project team to mark the milestone.

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly hearing from Pathways Plumbing – the Indigenous-owned plumbing contractor that has worked on the boarding house.  Director and Wurundjeri man Kaelun Brown provided the Welcome to Country – how special to have the Welcome delivered by a person who contributed so much to the project – and Uncle Ricky Morris (Founder of Pathways Plumbing) spoke about the pathways and opportunities that his company creates for young Indigenous people.  It was a very fitting way to mark the completion of a building that will provide pathways to opportunity for so many MITS students long into the future.

As we head into the Easter holidays I wish our students, families and MITS community a very happy and restful break.  We are excited to see you again in a couple of weeks!
