Teaching & Learning 5S

                                                        LEARNING IN 5S

Over the past few weeks in literacy, we analysed famous persuasive speeches written by Martin Luther King, Greta Thunberg and Severn Suzuki. We unpacked the content, identified key messages, formed opinions, made comparisons and discussed persuasive speech structure. 5S agreed that Greta’s climate change speech and delivery was strong and powerful compared to Martin Luther King’s, which was inspiring and motivating. It was highlighted by 5S that Martin Luther King’s repetition of the phrase - I have a dream - created hope and empowerment. 5S students were then given the opportunity to create their own dream for Langwarrin Primary School. Students wrote about a school with shorter hours, no uniform, and no homework. Do you know of a school like that? Students will use what they have learnt about effective speech writing as they embark on writing their own leadership speeches for 2023.

What’s the matter? This term in Science, 5S has looked at the three states of matter; solids, liquids and gases. 5S have conducted a range of different experiments exploring the different properties and characteristics of each state of matter.

5S conducting an experiment on the density and velocity of liquids.

Via our experiments 5S established that all three matters behave in different ways. When observing solids, 5S were surprised to establish that powders are made from solid materials. Did you know this? Although the grains of powder are very small, each grain of powder keeps its shape.  As a group however,  the powder behaves like a liquid, because they can pour and fill containers, just like liquids! 5S will finish the unit by explaining how and why solids can change state into liquids.
