In term 3, the numeracy focus of MYLNS has been to teach students real life numeracy skills. Students have been working in small groups with a MYLNS intervention teacher during one maths session per week. Students have demonstrated an understanding of number manipulation, rounding and the converting of fractions, decimals and percentages. The methods to solve the questions were developed by the students using problem solving and collaboration. These sessions have proven beneficial by students involved and their Maths teachers as they now have some skills t
hat can support them both in their Maths class and in the real world.
In term 4, students will be working on a recipe project where they need to adapt a recipe, cost a recipe and then make a recipe. This is designed to combine multiple skills taught during these sessions into a real-world context.
Student Quotes:
~ It activates my brain, and the activities give me some competition.
~ I like it because I am a visual learner. When the work is on the board and the teacher discusses it, I know what to do.
~ I do better because the work is explained slowly and visually.

Next term our Year 9 students will be experiencing formal examinations for the first time. They will sit an exam in both English and Maths as an introduction to their Senior schooling, where exams feature as a form of assessment. Students will be supported by their teachers during class time to prepare for their exams. This type of work will include skill building around how to answer practice questions, how to manage time during the exam and how to study. The best way to support your own child at home is to ensure they are completing regular homework, maintaining a strong attendance rate and seeking feedback from their teachers across the term about how they can continue to improve.
