Feast of the Assumption of Mary

On Friday 15th August we celebrated the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This day honours the event, when Mary, the mother of Jesus, was assumed, body and soul, into heaven at the end of her life. This is one of only two Catholic Holy Days of Obligation per year. We give thanks to Mary for saying Yes to God and we pray:

Hail Mary, full of Grace

The Lord is with you.

Blessed are you among women

And Blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God,                                                                                                                           Pray for us sinners now,                                                                                                                                 And at the hour of our death                                                                                                                        Amen

Feast Days and Festivals

As a faith-filled and culturally diverse Catholic School, we always love hearing, discussing, and learning about our student’s faith and cultural festivals. Last week two wonderful learning opportunities arose as different students informed us about their faith and cultural festivals.

Gurnoor and Jasmine G told us about the festival of Rakhi. They explained that this is a special festival to celebrate the precious bond between a brother and a sister, with sisters tying a special wristband on their brothers wrist and brothers and sisters exchanging gifts and sweets. It was wonderful to hear how they and their families celebrated this special festival.

Masooma, Saba and Zainab shared that between 31st July and 28th August, is a  period of mourning in the Islamic calendar called Muharram. Within Muharram there is a special sacred day being observed on the 10th Day called Ashura. The students explained how some families go to Mosque and some families also do a special procession walking from Gepps Cross to the City where they gather to pray together as a faith community.

At St. Brigid’s our students love to learn and share information about their faith and cultural festivals, however if there is any information that is not quite accurate please don't hesitate to let us know.

As Pope Francis says:

“If we go in search of other people, other cultures, other ways of thinking, other religious, we come out of ourselves and begin that beautiful adventure that is called ‘dialogue’. Dialogue is very important for one’s maturity, because in relation with other people, relations with other cultures, also in healthy relations with other religions, one grows; grows, matures.” – Pope Francis August 21, 2013

If you and your family have a special religious or cultural feast or festival coming up please let us know so we can share the ‘beautiful adventure’.

Yours in Love, Peace and Learning
