Year 5 Welcomes Stephanie Alexander

We have enjoyed another fantastic fortnight in the kitchen with Year 5.

Longing for something sweet Year 5 prepared delicious banana bread served with butter or yogurt. The task of smashing up the bananas was taken very seriously and for some a little challenging.  However, after all the hard work and some time in the oven, the result was a deliciously moist cake that left the kitchen smelling wonderfully of banana and cinnamon.

In week 7 Yera 5 prepared potato and rosemary pizza. We were honoured by a very special visit from the founder of our program Stephanie Alexander, the new SAKGP CEO Cathy Wilkinson, and board member Marianne Margin. Our special guests thoroughly enjoyed spending time in the garden with Tess and her Foundation class, then headed up to watch Year 5 prepare their pizzas. Year 5 expertly demonstrated knife skills by thinly slicing potatoes, preparing pizza dough that when risen rolling it out, and topping it with potato, fresh rosemary, oregano, parmesan cheese, sea salt, cracked pepper, and a drizzle of olive oil. Into the hot oven and after 20 minutes, we were ready to serve. Whilst waiting for the pizza to cook the students created their own harvest garden salads and dressings from produce collected that morning from our own garden.

Sitting down to enjoy this delicious lunch we were fortunate to be joined by Gabi, Kate M, and Zoe.  Gabi later commented:

it was great to be invited over to share a meal with the Year 5 students. Watching the students enthusiastically prepare their meals under the watchful eye of Stephanie Alexander was very exciting. In addition, seeing Stephanie Alexander teaching students how to knead dough was a real highlight.
