Bus to a Career

Last week some Year 11 and 12 students were bused around Alice to discover some of the career opportunities available to them in town. The careers on offer ranged from jobs they could do while they completed their high school studies, opportunities for their Gap year, apprenticeships, right though to management.

Students received an extensive look into the many aspects of hospitality at Lasseter's - trying their hand at making beds, mixing mocktails, cake decorating and table setting.

Students were then bused down to Imparja where we got a behind the scenes look at what goes into making TV (see above). A personal highlight of mine was seeing where Yamba's Playtime was filmed and a highlight for the students was having a chance to do some of their own filming in front of the green screen.

We had lunch at the Alice Springs Aquatic Centre and were shown all that's involved in keeping the pools fresh and clean and had the career opportunities of a lifeguard explained.

Our last bus stop was Central Australian Aboriginal Congress where we played "Smokes and Ladders", experienced how hard it is to function with varying levels of "beer goggles", learnt about some of the barriers to living a healthy life that First Nations people face and how CAAC is working to correct that.

All in all, it was a great day out and we are very grateful to everyone involved in putting it on. If there are any students who didn't attend that would like to know more about employment opportunities in Alice Springs, please get in touch with Ms Stacey Gill, the Careers Advisor at St Philips.
