McGuigan Shield 2022

The Term has ended with the proverbial bang. Yes, students have been busily finishing off assessments before the holidays, our VCAL students are completing projects, and some are beginning to look for apprenticeships and other pathways and the level of study for our VCE students has started to ramp up (along with the onset of some nerves). We have had Child Safety Week, RUOK Day, including the annual Colour Run, brilliantly led by the VCAL classes, Footy Colours Day (Go Pies!!) and a sensational VET Music Performance night cross campus on Wednesday night. And no one will forget the process and announcement of our new student Executive for 2023 and the House Leader team who will continue to lead us out of that dreaded period that interrupted our momentum so drastically (I can’t even bring my self to say the word… Voldemort is it?)

Possibly the phoenix to all these special events and activities, is the presentation of the McGuigan Shield for 2022. Named after the priest who was instrumental in starting St. Peter’s College, Fr Jimmy McGuigan, the McGuigan Shield in some ways represents the skill, commitment, persistence, organisation and enthusiasm of our House System which uses healthy and respectful competition to help galvanise each House, focused on a common goal, while strengthening the sense of belonging that is so integral to our success as a community at St. Peter's College. In a hotly contested Shield, any of four Houses were in the running and Assisi and MacKillop Houses were tied at the top, only separated by the Annual Chess Event. Assisi House channelled their Bobby Fisher and were able to come through the stalemate with a famous win.

As always, it is the activities themselves, the participation in the myriad of events and competitions, and the team spirit and sportsmanship, that we most value at St. Peter's College, but that is not to say there aren’t seven other Houses already planning to take out Assisi House in 2023 – I can hear House Leader Mr De Goldi and his new House Captains thinking ‘Bring it on!’
