District Athletics Carnival

By Cassia, Charlotte, and Izzy, Year 6

On the 28th of July, a large group of students represented our school at the Ascot Vale District Athletics Carnival at the Moonee Valley Athletics Track. There were many events such as sprints, relays, long jump, discus, shot put, triple jump, and high jump. Closer to the end of the day there was quite a bit of rain, so it was very slippery, which made it hard for people who were doing races, putting more pressure on the students. During the day when NMPS had an event, everyone had a great attitude and cheered each other on.

One of the first competitions was the triple jump. There were lots of students from NMPS competing. What you had to do was jump twice on one foot and once on the other and jump land in a sand pit. I was quite nervous on my first go but was confident enough to jump further into the pit the next time I tried. Overall, it was very fun.

Everyone in the 11 year old girls relay group was gathered on the grass in front of the track. The whole team (Charlotte, Lily M, Zeina, and Ruby V) were shaking with nerves. When they finished giving out instructions, we took our positions throughout the track. Zeina started first with the baton and ran well in fourth place. Ruby then passed it to Lily, who passed it to me. We ran as fast as we could, but we didn’t have a lead. We ended up getting fourth, which was still good 😋

My (Izzy) first race of the day was the 100-meter sprint. When they gathered the racers, my heart was pounding and I was very scared. As soon as the race started, I had a good start, but someone caught up and I got a bit behind and finished 4th. I was pretty happy about it for my first race. Before my second race, I had about a 10 min rest and then started to get ready for my 200-meter race. When the race started, I bolted at the start and it was too hard for someone to catch up. I came first in my heat and got 3rd in my age group, so I was super happy about that and I got a ribbon.
