From the Head of Sport

This week we concluded our sport Presentation evenings for the 2022 Winter season. I would like to thank Mr Grace (Rugby), Miss Stammer (Boys' Football), Mrs Naumann (Girls' Football), Miss Stockley (Netball) and Mrs Hyslop (Hockey), not only for the work that they put into the recent Presentation evenings but for all they have done for their sport during the 2022 season. Their coaching and organisational skills are what makes these sports so successful.

We now move onto summer sport. It is very important that all students are checking their emails, the School screens and listening to information given out at training by their coach to ensure they are at the right place at the right time.

Congratulations - Cross Country, Orienteering

National Cross-Country Championships – Adelaide 26-29th August  (from Mr Harrison)

Congratulations to Casper Larkin (Year 11), Keeden Harrison (Year 7) and Tasman Harrison (Year 4) who represented BMGS and NSW in Adelaide recently at the Australian Cross-Country Championships. It was a fantastic Cross Country course, set out on a wet, grassy and undulating country race course on the outskirts of Adelaide.

The competition was hot with NZ sending over 24 runners from their National championships to join all Australian States & Territories at the Carnival.

You know you are at that next level when there is an Opening Ceremony, the dignitaries come out to speak and the National Anthem is sung. The BMGS runners represented our School with grace and determination. Special congratulations to Tasman for picking up a couple of Gold medals for NSW in two teams’ events which culminated in the very exciting 5 x 1,000m relay run on Monday morning.

  • Casper Larkin         - 43/120+
  • Keeden Harrison    - 30/86
  • Tasman Harrison   - 24/42 (Gold Medal for NSW for the lowest combined individual scores)

Orienteering

Thank you to those parents who entered their child in the 2022 Schools Orienteering Championships.  Due to the wonderful training sessions led by Mark and Vanessa Freeman in the lead up to this competition, our athletes were very confident venturing out onto unknown venues with their maps orientated and brains working overtime. Please see a report below from Mark Freeman about the event:

BMGS made its mark on the NSW Schools Orienteering Carnival last weekend, with students from Years 7 to 12 displaying their Orienteering skills with enthusiasm, despite Saturday’s cold and wet weather.

Students competed across two classes - A Class for experienced Orienteers, and B Class for newer Orienteers and those experiencing their first Orienteering carnival.

Day 1 consisted of two “Sprint” events navigating around two courses at two different high schools in very heavy rain!

Year 7 students Ruby Dowdell, Aiden Mungai and Alton Freeman entered the A category for their age group in the sprints, with Alton finishing 2nd overall after winning the first event but making some navigational errors in the second.

Casper Larkin (Year 11) entered the A category for his age group and performed admirably against some elite and experienced orienteers.  Casper finished both races without errors in very respectable times.

Day 2 was a “Bush” event navigating longer cross-country courses through Scheyville National Park.

Ruby Dowdell and Alton Freeman ran the bush event in the A category again, with Ruby completing the course with no errors, and Alton finishing his race in First place.

Aiden Mungai ran the bush event in the B category, and after taking lessons from mis-punches and navigational errors on Day 1, Aiden also finished Day 2 in First place for B category – an amazing achievement for a novice!

Oliver Freeman (Year 12) ran the A category for his age group and produced a highly respectable Third place performance against some elite orienteers.

It was great to see these students enjoying the physical and mental challenge of Orienteering.

Further results just in!

Following on from Mr Freeman's report, BMGS -  in their inaugural Orienteering team entry - came out Champions, winning the Secondary Shield and contributing to the NSWCIS points to help with an overall win by the Independent Schools Association.

Now that our students have achieved such success I hope to see even more interest from BMGS students for future training and competition. Thank you again to Mark and Vanessa for their ongoing support of all sport at BMGS.

BMGS will be playing in the ISA Western competition with games being held either in the Blue Mountains or in Bathurst or Orange. A school bus will be provided to transport students to matches. Training will be held at the Wentworth Falls tennis courts on Falls Road.

ISA Athletics Carnival

The ISA Athletics Carnival is on this coming Tuesday, 13th September. If you do not own a BMGS singlet you will be required to hire one from the Uniform Shop by Monday. Please ensure that you are organised. All students are to wear navy shorts or BMGS tights.
