Vocational Major Update
Dear Parents and Carers,
What a few weeks it has been for our VM students!! On Tuesday 14th February the Year 12s visited Monash University Clayton where we invested the day in them to help them plan for success. We discussed how to stay healthy in Year 12 (make sure we are picked for the team - job/ apprenticeship/ 2024 course), learnt lots about alternative pathway options in our chosen field, built relationships through games and activities, ate pizza and set goals for the year. The Vocational Major Captains Cooper Allisey, Charlotte Brundenell and Harry Medley ran some great team building and communication activities to finish off the day.
Our Year 12s backed it up with an excursion to the Yakult Factory on Thursday as part of their WRS curriculum. Students had an opportunity to view the entire production process. They were able to watch how the hi-tech facility incorporates food processing equipment designed specifically for manufacturing Yakult, including Yakult's distinctively shaped bottles, filling and packaging lines, culture and quality control rooms.
The Year 11 students had a visit from the What Bus as part of their PDS curriculum. The What Bus is essentially a Youth Center on wheels which provides outreach services to youth within the Frankston Area.
Some things to look forward to.....
Tuesday 28th Feb and Thursday 2nd March - Year 12 Salvation Army and Big Issue excursion
Monday 6th March - Year 12 Victorian Tunnelling Centre excursion
21st March - Year Cyber Safety Incursion
27th March - 28th March - Year 11 VM CAMP!!!! Payment is due 5th March. This is always the highlight of the Year 11 program.
A reminder that Wednesday is Curriculum Day. External VETs will still be running and students are expected to attend.
9th March is Parent Teacher Conferences, classes will be cancelled but please book in a time to see your child's teacher.
All students should now have found a work placement for a Wednesday or a Friday. Students who have not returned these forms will be required at school each Friday. During this time they will be allocated to classes and will have time to complete overdue work as well as meet with their mentor teacher who can assist them to find a work placement. Mentor teachers may help the students brainstorm where they might go as well as write a script to call a potential employer. They may also help them to look on the SWL portal for any opportunities that the school might have access to.

Youngster. Co - a social enterprise creating job opportunities for students by helping seniors with tech challenges. Our intergenerational program offers opportunities for students to gain volunteering and job experience and is a great way to improve their employability skills. We are looking for students (Year 10 and above) who are interested in assisting seniors at the Karingal Hub with basic technology needs, mostly around the use of mobile phones.
The Trades Fit – Young Women in Trades and Tech expo is back in 2023. This free event is on Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 May at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
School bookings for the event close on Thursday 6 April 2023.
The interactive expo demonstrates the exciting world of trade and tech industries and the rewarding and highly paid career opportunities they can provide.
The event is for young women and non-binary people in years 9 to 12 in Victorian secondary schools. It provides a comfortable space where students are given hands-on experiences across a number of industries, including:
- building and construction
- electrical engineering
- plumbing
- automotive and marine
- aviation
- transport and logistics
- robotics
- mining
- agriculture
- horticulture.
Students who attend can participate in practical learning experiences, technology displays, information sessions and panel discussions.
The department is hosting the event to spotlight future employment opportunities for young women in industries that are traditionally male dominated.
Last year, more than 1,500 students from 94 schools attended the expo.
